What's the origin of the nickname 'momo'?

Is this something her english-speaking fans adopted or it is derived from French?

Curious, DelMonte

One of the french-speaking posters on one of the unofficial fanpage either pasted/transcribed an article or reported that s/he'd read in an article that Amelie had been nicknamed "Momo" by her friends/tennis aquaintances at the time (it was back in 99/00, so my memory is fuzzy)

It caught on with a bunch of us who started using it on multiple boards - and it has so many fun derivations (Momosapien - thank you Brian Stewart! - Momosexual....) I don't know taht I'd be able to stop using it if we found out the original poster was wrong

From what I know, it's from her last name - pronounced MO-res-MO, hence Momo

It´s just a fun word, coming from Homosexual, in this case it´s Momosexual...that´s really funny. I have a lot of gay friends, maybe I will come up with some new names for them
