The German Open

The first edition (for women) having taken place in 1896 in Hamburg, the German Open is one of the oldest tournaments on the WTA tour. It was held in Hamburg until 1978 (with breaks from 1914-19 and 1940-47 inclusive because of war) and transferred to the Rott-Weiss (Red-White) Club in Berlin in 1979. In 1980, the Federation Cup was played at the Rott-Weiss Club instead of the normal tournament. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the German Open's transfer to Berlin.

The tournament was traditionally held in August as the last major tournament of the year on European soil and came at the end of a European post-Wimbledon summer clay-court circuit which included tournaments in Sweden, The Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Russia/USSR as well as several events in Germany, most notably the Bavarian Championships in Munich. After Wimbledon, the top players either headed across the Atlantic to play on the American circuit leading up to the US Championships or they stayed on the clay in Europe.

Until the upheavals in the circuit in the 1970s, the German Open, along with the Italian and South African Championships, was considered one of the most prestigious tournaments outside of the Grand Slam events. However, when the US professional tennis circuit emerged in the early 70s, the European tournaments could not compete with the prize money on offer stateside and the European circuit lost its prestige. In 1971, the German Championships tried to maintain its status by changing date and becaming a major warm-up event for Roland Garros. Its status continued to decline, however, because most of the top players in the 70s were involved in World Team Tennis and stopped competing on European clay altogether.

Happily, the tournament's fortunes were revived in the 1980s thanks first to the return of top players from overseas after the collapse of World Team Tennis and then to the emergence of Steffi Graf whose immense success contributed to the dramatic increase in the popularity of tennis in Germany and whose loyalty to the German Open ensured that it attracted the fans.

Recently, however, the tournament's future has been thrown into doubt by financial problems. The roll of honour for this tournament indicates its important place in the history of women's tennis and let's hope that this year's event is a resounding success which guarantees the future of this event for many years to come.
