Recent success of Emilie Loit? are you surprised?

I'm not. We got a chance to see her vs Serena at last year OZ Open and almost sending Serena packing. She has a natural talent. and being a left helped her to trouble her opponent. Nice lefty serve and big forehand. Her problem was her fitness level, and she has been a lot more fitter than a couple years back.

Excellent doubles player, and it's about time she has great results in singles too.

What do you think about her?

Surprised? No.

Impressed. No.

In the April 19th rankings, Loit is #27. Look at the rankings of who she beat in the April 19th rankings.

The problem with that victory near-victory over Serena is she didn't follow it up with more play on that level. I eventually decided that match had more to do with Serena being off than Loit being good.
Having said that, I have to concede that most WTA players never win ONE tournament in their careers, let alone two. But she IS ranked #27. Maybe it's time to step up withthe big girls and find out where she's at.

Is she playing J&S?

the problem with that "victory" is that she lost the match. seemed like a victory to her though i guess and maybe it's taken a while for her to follow that up nicely.

The fact is some people like Anna Kournikova can beat tons of Top 10 players and not win a title and still be critizied for it. While Emilie Loit has won two titles and only losers like you (Volcana) will actually look at the rankings of some of the players.

I remember seeing her a few years ago, maybe 2000 when she faced and lost to Venus Williams in the third round of the French Open. You could see the talent (even Mac said it) of Loit, but then she really not in that great of tennis shape at all. I am amazed at some of the angles she produces, they are quite nice -- she is a talented player indeed.

A look at a few other players she has beaten, higher ranked ones at least
  • Took Conchita to 3 at Roland Garros 97.
  • Beat Magdalena in 98 when Magdalena wasn't Magdalena.
  • Narrowly lost to Tauziat in the next round.
  • Had her best result at a grand slam (still stands) by reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open, beating Lucic, then Smashnova and upset 9th seeded Conchita Martinez. No notable wins after that.
  • A dead year in 00.
  • Pushed Farina-Elia to 3 in 02. Beat Likhovtseva.
  • Improved her record against Conchita Martinez to 2-1 upsetting her in Acapulco.
  • ITF - Won 50K Dinan, and Cagnes-Sur-Mer in 02.
  • Pushed Serena to three in Australia.
  • Beat Chanda Rubin (then top 10?) in Rome as LL.
  • Beat Elena Dementieva in Strasbourg.
  • Beat then top near top 30 Alexandra Stevenson 2 times in 02.
  • Sent Maria Sharapova packing at the US Open 03, losing to Capriati in three sets.
When ya look at it, she has had a good career, but 04 has been really good to her. She pushed Davenport in Australia before injuring herself and hobbled off the court in the third set losing it 0-6. The highest ranked player she has faced is Davenport. The highest ranked player she has beaten this year is Tanasugarn, who sits at a sad 56.

She's a very talented player. Her game could give tremendous problems to the top players; she just needs to believe in herself more.

Perhap winning back to back lower Tier events, and in 10 matches the highest ranked opponent was ranked 57 may not be that impressive, but is still important to Emilie regardless.

Will she do better against higher ranked players? Who knows but you have to admit when you win titles, regardless of how prestigous or not, it does well for our confidence.

Perhaps now Emilie will become a consistent performer. And then again, maybe not. But she is a tournament champion so just give her props were it is due and for now leave it at that.

she has been playing low tier tournaments this year to get her ranking up. winning 2 tournaments back to back is a great achievement and it something lefties love doing on clay eg serna last year and patty in 98.

emile has a lethal forehand, a strong net game, a decent backhand and effective serve. i think her size (or lack there of) and absence of coetzer like speed to compensate will prevent her from reaching the very top echelons of the game, but she has shown she can stand toe to toe with the biggest power hitters in the game (easily winning sets of serena, davenport and capriati) and now that she appears to have gained a lot more consistantcy i really do believe she could reach the top 15 or maybe even sneak into the top ten at some stage in her career (maybe the end of it like many french women seem to eg testud, tauziat, halard-decugis)

Impressed? Very! (After wining her first tourney, she didn't let success derail her momentum)
