russians vs. americans

There are at the moment 5 Russian and 5 American girls in top 20, that's one half of top20.
In top 100- 12 Russians and 13 Americans, that is 25% of top100 girls.
I know that Russian girls are young, but I never really paid so much attention to it, since there are many good americans on Tour as well. But, only 2 out of these 12 russians are over 25 years of age, while americans hold 9/13 (only williams sisters, granville and harkleroad)!
So, what do you think top 10, or top 20 might look like 5-6 yeras from now, considering the fact that americans are leaving and russians are young and promising? Or is that not the case?

It's good to see another country challenge the US. In the 60s and 70s, Australia and Britain were the main challengers, in the 80s we had the Czechs and the Germans and in the 90s the Spanish (we would have had the Germans too but Steffi played so rarely for her country). Now we've got the Belgians and the French, as well as the Russians up there. It's difficult to imagine that one or two of the current Russian youngsters won't break through to the very top level.

2 Belgians in the top 20 and we have such a small country. Isn't it great?

Go Kim Clijsters

Dementieva is a perfect example

She has been around for awhile now, and has been in the top 20 for many years, so yes. The Russians will be able to stay at the top consistantly

As SJW said, the russians in the top 20 are all YOUNG I think three are under 20, so itsn not really fair to compare them to the americans. That said there isnt any young upcoming americans, that ahve really caught my eye (Harkleroad still needs to improve), so I guess in that respect Russia has the edge (especially since Davenport, and Capriati probably only have a few years left in the sport).

That's good for the Russians, but you just can't underestimate the American women in sports, as afar as womens sports go, they are the best athletes in the world. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a young American female tennis player somewhere who we've never heard of who will be #1 within the next 7-10 years.

Well, 5-6 years from now I expect Venus, Serena and Justine will still hold three of the top ten spots. Based on what we see now, there's every chance it'll be the top three. None of the Russians SO FAR have shown they're GS winning material.

Kim, being so young and a former #1, should also be around. She could check out early and start a family though.

Based on solid all-around games, the three Russians I see holding top ten spots for years and years are Myskina, Petrova and Kuznetsova. The serves of Zvonareva and Dementieva limit both. Right now.

I'm holding off on Sharapova.

If the game continues and accelerates it's current (slight) movement to what I'll call a 'power all-court' style, the pure baseliners will fall. However Hantuchova and/or Dokic could both see the light, and diversify their games.

Amelie will have retired by then, the constant injuries being too much to bear.

ANd there will be at aleast two top ten players who've shown no sign so far.

Proud to be an American
Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

That's quite interesting and I suspect they will hoover around the top, and maybe snag a slam. I definately wouldn't count them out. Russian women were Known Gold Medal winners in the Olympics and so were East German Women. However, they were highly accused of taking illegal supplements. Yet they have a severe competitive spirit.
