Williams sisters top Acura Classic field

Williams sisters top Acura Classic field

CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) -- Serena and Venus Williams and Belgians Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters are among the top players entered in the Acura Classic.

Serena will be making her singles debut in the July 24-Aug. 1 tournament at La Costa Resort and Spa. She withdrew last year because of knee surgery.

Venus won the tournament three times, although she withdrew

last year after being injured at Wimbledon.

Other top players entered are: 1998 winner Lindsay Davenport, two-time winner Jennifer Capriati, Amelie Mauresmo, Ai Sugiyama, and Russians Anastasia Myskina, Elena Dementieva and Nadia Petrova.

The tournament has moved up to Tier I status, making it one of the largest women's tournaments in the world. The field will expand to 56 players.

"With the commitments we've gotten so far, it looks like this year is shaping up to be the best ever," said Raquel Giscafre of Promotion Sports Inc., which owns the tournament.

This is women's tennis so we can say 1/2 those players wont play 1 match in the tournament.

"I told her, `You don't want to get into a hitting battle with Sharapova, because it would be uneven for Sharapova, because Sharapova only has one good side and that's her backhand,"'. "`You don't want to get into that for the simple reason you would win. So try to hit some balls to her strong side, to her backhand, and that would help you with your match for tomorrow

The Acura people say it will be on ESPN. It used to be on FoxSportsNet every year.

I worry about ms Venus playing 3 tournies in a row Stan-LA-San, but then she has always played 3 WTA tournies during the summer and shes kinda superstitious bout these things...

Thanks to the US Open Series bonus money, a lot of springtime injuries will be fully healed in the summer. They'll all be there.
