If you can compare body types, why not games? Even at 17, Serena was a force on the tour.

Serena's such a smart and technically sound player. Great serve technique. Insatiable appetite to win. Very mentally strong. In great shape at all times.

You know, it's not as common as people think that someone is talented and hardworking and mentally prepared enough to excel on the tour. As spectators, we can easily watch and make analysis and demands of our stars, but when it comes to executing, it's tough. All the right stars need to align properly for success to occur. Look at Lucic, totally talented with a bright prospect yet detracted by a number of things.

So I believe that there are several girls with potential...yet for it all to line up and equal championship success on a consistent basis...well, I think it's way more rare than common. It's what differentiates the GREATS from everyone else. That's why Serena is such an inspiration.

I'm not really into the whole comparison game. Because why then isn't Serena as good as so and so at 22.. 23? People are just different. It happens.

This is very true. I can think of a lot of matches where Serena played under very difficult circumstances and still won, even when she was down and the crowds were against her. There were times when she was probably overcome by the combination of the crowd and the other player, but she is human and these things will happen. In this regard, she is truly in a class by her herself. I don't know if many of the teens on tour now can handle difficult situations like Serena did and still be sucessful amidst them.

lol, I wouldnt want to have a "muscular" body type at 17
I like those cute ones better aka Anna Kournikova Maria Sharapova Elena Dementieva
Martina Hingis one is pretty good for modeling too, just....too short

How come they aren't as good as Hingis, who was number one in the word at 16, something Serena certainly didn't achieve.

Different people mature at different times. Sharapova might someday be number one herself, although right now I don't see it. But I probably wouldn't have though many girls would get there, from what they looked like at 16.

Well Serena only started AT age 16, so thats gonna be difficult....everything else she did pretty much as well and in some cases better than martina herself.

Martina Is the best teen player to have played the game , to have been number one at sixteen and won mulitple slams is just amazing Serenas not far behind - It would b great if in todays game one of the new girls stepped up and won a big tourney / reached a GS Semi or something - come one Sesil!

Two things:

1-I made the thread as a joke, to compete with the body-type thread

2-Serena won the US Open in 99, it was her 7th major played. Hingis won the 97 Australian, it was her 9th major played. In terms of # of majors played, Serena's better.

Not ot mention the fact that Hingis was not affected by the age ristriction rule, Serena was, so all she could play was a few tournaments each year which stalled her results, or else you've got to believe that Serena would've won a major long before her us open win! Besides; Hingis can keep that record for the youngest to win a slam, it's the reason why she is burnt out right now, I bet she would trade in that record for a chance to still be playing!!?

Because players who can win six GS titles AT ALL don't come along all that often. remember, the last two players who could do it were Monica and Steffi. Players that good just aren't that common.
