What's happened to Dani?

Her record over the past twelve months is 20-23.

She's only made it as far as the quarters three times

She hasn't made ANY semis

Her only win over players who were top thirty at the time were Raymond and Sharapova.

She's losing to players like Asagoe, Harkleroad, Mandula and Irvin. These are competent players, but a GS 3rd round is a big deal for any of them.

I'm going to go taboo. If you put a gun to my head, I'd say i BELIEVE she's bulimic. She just no longer has the strength to generate her old pace. But my only proof of that is the degeneration of her results. She didn't weigh a lot when she was winning.

However their is one other possibility. Who's the other player who's game seemingly collapsed for no good reason? Dokic. What do they share? One dimensional flat-hitting baseline power games. Sure they both USED to do more. But not in the last year. Perhaps the tour is catching up to the baseline power game the way it caught up to Hingis. The baseline power players who are still successful all have big serves. These two don't.

But the most disturbing thing where Dani is concerned is that there are NO flashes of her old self. Her results are distressingly consistent. She hasn't played more than two matches in a tournament all year, except at the US Open and Tokyo, where she played three.

This isn't a slump. The problematic results go back more than a year. It doesn't seem to be like Mary Pierce, or Monica, always getting hurt and falling back. Ever since some idiot tried to turn her into a sex symbol her game's come unglued.

She hasn't shown any symptoms of being bulimic and there's no concrete evidence to prove it so I don't think she is.

Dani is rumoured to have off-court problems and changing coaches who have their own ways of restructuring her game has caused a massive contradiction.

Her confidence is at an all-time low.

She lost a lot of weight training at her coach's ranch in South Africa and her metabolism means she can't equal her k/cal output. Too much aerobic training through a poorly planned schedule initiated her downfall as her appearance became the subject of a scathing British press at Eastbourne last year.

Do I think she'll return? Yes, but patience is needed because it won't happen overnight - sacking Solomon was a backwards step but even his long-term plan came to fruition before he was inexplicably dismissed.

Forgive me, but her appearance IS the evidence. That and this seemingly inexplicable loss of form. I don't buy that old 'confidence' arguement. She's gone form being a top five player to barely a top fifty player. That's not 'los of confidence' or 'changing coaches'.

As for burning more calories than she takes in, EAT MORE. It's not that complicated.

Actually, I need to be fair. While I'm sure there's a physical problem, I can't possibly know if it's bilimia. But I've been there, and I've known plenty of other people who've been there too, and Dani certainly fits the pattern.

She played three matches in Tokyo this year. She beat Molik and Sharapova, but then lost to Davenport.

And it's not just WHO she's losing to...it's HOW she's losing. Most of the losses are so extremely one-sided.

I just watched the 2002 OZ Open third RD. Venus def. Dani 3-6 6-0 6-4. She WAS a top player. With more experience, she probably would have beaten Venus that day. She did out play Hingis at Indian Wells. Where's that confidence?

I've heard of a slump, but this is amazing. I don't know what happened, but it started this time last year after the FCC. Harkleroad crushed her. That seemed to be the beginning of the end.

She actually played 4 singles matches at the Hopman Cup

I agree She'll be back but patience is the key! If it takes 2 months great if it takes 2 years so be it. I wish she had stayed with Solomon but she has to feel comfortable and believe in what she has so if she is happy and thinks it will work well that is what matters.

Lightbulb

I don't think she suffers from bulimia or anorexia.

She obviously lost a lot of weight last year which probably caused her to lose energy and power.

Off court problems seem more likely apparently her parents divorced?

How about if we take a different perspective. What if she never had the talent in the first place. What if she fluked it? Those times where she beat Hingis (Hingis was no where near her best) and where she pushed Venus to 3 sets (Venus wasn't at her best either, at least not her 2000 run best).

So what if Dani is and has always been just a top 50 player?

I'm not saying she IS, but I'm asking. What if?

When that IW win dropped off her points, Dani was still #8. So at one time, she was a top ten player WITHOUT that win. The talent WAS there. At one point. She's basically Anna K with a tournament win.

Bad example. When you get bageled, the problem isn't just 'more experience'.

Also, ithink it started when she went home after OZ.
Code:
03 Sydney.. QF L DAVENPORT... 4-6 6-3 6-7
03 AusOpen. QF L WILLIAMS, V. 4-6 3-6
03 Paris... QF L DEMENTIEVA.. 5-7 3-6
03 Antwerp. SF L WILLIAMS,V.. 1-6 4-6
03 IW...... 16 L COETZER..... 4-6 4-6
03 Miami... 64 L MOLIK....... 6-2 5-7 0-6

Remember, Dani was a top ten player at that point. No crime losing to Lindsay or Venus, but Elena D didn't hae her current form then. She wasn't top ten, and Dani was definitely favored in that match. Dani had been going deep into tournament quite consistently for a year up til then. And once she came back to the states, the bottom fell out.

She was already playing bad before Sydney 2003, at the Hopman Cup she had bad losses to Molik and Bedanova. She was noticeably much skinnier than she had been the previous year and couldnt keep the ball in the court for long.

Yeah, but if you make the QFs at Sydey, OZ and apris, youget the benefit of the doubt.

It's been talked about how skinny Daniela is, but if you look at her recent pictures, I think she has made improvements on her weight. And I wouldn't say that Dani doesn't have the talent, because I was watching her 3rd round match at the US Open against Tanasugarn, I can still see that she was making the big shots, but the crucial thing is that she was missing all the easy winners. This lack of confidence is what has been killing her on the court. And why this sudden lack of confidence, we may never know, she has gone through a lot over the past years. I agree that splitting with Soloman is a huge step backwards, because she was finally doing well with wins over Molik and Sharapova in Tokyo. I hope that her decision to get back with Sears is a good one, or else I don't see how things can improve.
