Davenport Enters Pilot Pen

Davenport Enters Pilot Pen

Lindsay Davenport By Tennis Week
04/20/2004

Lindsay Davenport has finished near the head of the class every time she's visited the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale. The fourth-ranked American will try to continue her streak of success when she makes her sixth appearance at the Pilot Pen tournament in New Haven, Connecticut, August 20-28th.
The three-time Grand Slam champion has reached the tournament final in all five of her previous New Haven appearances, including last year when she fell to Jennifer Capriati.

The 27-year-old Davenport, who recently claimed her 40th career championship, beating Amelie Mauresmo in the final of Amelia Island, joins second-ranked Kim Clijsters and 21st-ranked Maria Sharapova as early entrants in the Pilot Pen field.

"I'm looking forward to returning to New Haven, since the Pilot Pen is one of my favorite tournaments to play," said Davenport, who was runner-up to Venus Williams in her prior appearances in the final. "I'm also excited about the prospect of representing my country in the Olympics in Athens, but regardless, I will be ready for the Pilot Pen."

Now competing in her 14th year on Tour, Davenport quickly moved back into the game's elite last year after knee surgery sidelined her for much of 2002. She ended 2003 strongly, reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the semifinals at the U.S. Open, claiming her sixth top-four finish in the past seven years. Davenport battled through some foot and leg injuries last year, including one that caused her retirement in the fourth game of the second set in last year's Pilot Pen final, but has recovered well and has been near full strength recently.

Isn't the Olympics and Pilot Pen tournament really close to each other and then right after the Pilot Pen is the USopen? I think Lindsay is making a mistake playing the Olympics and Pilot Pen. I hope Venus avoids Pilot this year.

Has Lindsay been chosen to play Olympics? Maybe she's assuming Venus and Serena will be on the team with Raymond/Navratilova repping in doubles...

No one has been chosen as of yet, however, I'm better than 90% sure she would make the singles team. She has been reported as saying that she does not want to play doubles. She probably would NOT make the doubles team selection anyway since that will probably go to Williams x 2 AND Lisa/Navy.

That's what it looks like to me. I can't see her playing in Athens, flying to Connecticut to play the next week, then playing the Open. That's too much.

If Lindsay is chosen to play for the Olympics, I'm sure she'll withdraw. New Haven isn't until late August...we are only in mid-April.

I have never been able to understand why its news when players enter tournaments that are such a long way off. Now if we were talking about the grass court season since its right after the clay season that would be another thing. Sigh....

There are so many things that could happen in the meantime. Whats next, the entry list of the US Open?

Take care of your character. Reputation will sort itself.

How nice of her to let the rest of the field have a shot at that trophy

I think it'll be interesting to see what happens to New Haven this year - they usually have a great line-up from being right before the Open and just an hour north of NYC. They're going to take a serious hit this year due to the Olympics.

Reason is poor propaganda when opposed by the yammering, unceasing lies of shrewd and evil and self-serving men.

Not suprising. After the tears on court last year, she said she would be back in 2004. Yay I get to see Lindsay in person again. Viva Linds.
