There is no doubt about it — Serena Williams is the queen of women’s tennis.
The holder of 21 grand slam trophies and 70 career titles has long been unstoppable on the court. Last year, she claimed three of the year’s four majors, falling agonizingly short of completing the coveted calendar Grand Slam when she lost to Roberta Vinci in the US Open semifinals.
She’s brutally dominating, and her sheer power accompanied by those piercing screams just blows opponents away time and time again.
<snip>
Knowing how down Mladenovic must have been, Williams offered more than just the obligatory handshake at the net. Waiting until the pair got back in the locker room, the American walked over to the French woman and gave her a hug.

to me, this is a side of serena williams i see all the time; shes just a sweetheart.
her RARE side is actually her feisty heated attitude on court, given that she spends much more time off than on court

Re: This is a side of Serena Williams you don’t see often
Serena's really changed in the last...I don't know, 4-5 years, IMO. She's gotten much calmer, less bitter (especially after losing), more friendly with the WTA. She used to be very "Me and Venus vs. The World." Maybe her friendship with Caroline has something to do with it?
Re: This is a side of Serena Williams you don’t see often
A bully and a bad sport?
I don't know why she has that reputation. Serena has always given a friendly handshake, when she loses a match too. She is fierce on court but that doesn't make her a bully.
She got angry towards umpires a few time but it wasn't worse than John McEnroe. She apologized for the Us Open incident. And come on, we all get angry sometimes but Serena has a camera in her face when she does one of the most important things in her life.
Serena is one of the few women on the WTA to give a normal handshake. She was angry towards Henin at Roland Garros 2003 but that was Henin's fault (the hand incident).
Many players like Serena a lot, unlike Sharapova for example.

 You keep forgetting about her constant 'I was playing 10% today out there, that's why I lost' statements in press conferences and her giving no credit to her opponents whatsoever.
Oh and lets not forget her on court tantrums.
I really like the person Serena has grown into, but lets be real.
Re: This is a side of Serena Williams you don’t see often
i don't really know where the bully and a bad sport comes from... she seems to have always gotten along with her opponents. her bad reputation comes from her aggressive behaviour towards officials like when she was disqualified from a grand slam semi-final match for threatening to shove a ball down a lines-woman's throat.
she's always great with her opponents though, whether she wins or loses.

Ummm telling MJMS "I'll get you in the locker room," Razzano said she got death glares from Reehanna after the 2012 upset, comments like "lucky shots" and the ones after losing to Cornut at Wimbledon in 2014, calling Vika a bitch at Wimbledon last year, earlier in her career saying she'd never heard of her opponents (which she has drastically changed now, seeming to be very informed about competition). It's delusional to act like that reputation comes from nowhere. More importantly though she does seem to be improving a lot.
Re: This is a side of Serena Williams you don’t see often
Even if she was a bitch off court she would still be one of the greatest (if not the greatest) ever. The fact that she's an actual human being makes it all the more appraisable.
Re: This is a side of Serena Williams you don’t see often
The thing for Serena is that her "outbursts" are very high profile and memorable, in a way that her usual good sportswomanship isn't.
I do notice that when she loses a match, or gets pushed hard, she usually has kind words for her opponent at net. She's also very consistent about applauding the impressive play of her opponents on court in a way that not many others are. It's not surprising to see her consoling Kiki like that, to me
Re: This is a side of Serena Williams you don’t see often
Really? It’s nothing new. Serena has class despite what ppl say about her on court behaviour, that is Serena fighting with herself and she never means to disrespect her opponent. She knows how hard it is to lose - And she also knows that SomeOne can beat her. She respects her opponent and we saw that at the AO Final, that was a class act and a side of Serena we know she has.
Re: This is a side of Serena Williams you don’t see often
I'm glad it got press pick-up even if the tone of the article or headline wasn't spot on...
I noticed it a few hours ago and thought it was sweet, almost shared with a new thread. Happens at the end of this video uploaded to RG's Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Twj9EYAXu8w
Re: This is a side of Serena Williams you don’t see often
Serena is maybe the kindest, warmest individual on the WTA tour (with the exception of Venus). We all know the real reason as to why certain people dislike her, though.
Re: This is a side of Serena Williams you don’t see often
Anybody who can't tell that Serena is a sweetheart off the court is blind. She has numerous videos of her outside of tennis that almost always shows a very warm and friendly side of her.
On the court, she is one of the fiercest competitors and it does sometimes get out of control, but, never intentionally towards her opponent.
Re: This is a side of Serena Williams you don’t see often
we do not see it often because it does not often exists, and she is in the spotlight more years than any other player and yet these moments are rare...serena hugs a player she likes and suddenly she is the sweetest player,
Re: This is a side of Serena Williams you don’t see often
Serena told me that she's human, she told me that yes she can be a bitch sometimes, but she's gotten older and doesn't want to hold grudges and baggage anymore. She's becoming wiser and thus, acts more maturely instead of being childishly mean spirited. I give credit to Serena for maturing and now seeing things differently, let bygones by bygones
