Why has Monica never gotten herself into top shape to compete?

Lindsay knew she needed to get into better shape to compete w/the best, and has made a remarkable transformation, most of the top players have fitness trainers, players are getting stronger fitter and faster, did Monica let the game pass her by.

She has stated that she'd like to compete for slams, yet hasn't put in the work. She ran out of steam in the 98 French final, was that to be her last slam final?

Can't wait to see her return, and look for that fire in her eyes, and of course a change in her physical fitness.

"And for the best of the teen-agers who followed her, and who occasionally referred to her as over the hill, Graf had a ready answer: against top-ranked Martina Hingis, Graf wound up 7-2. Graf's stirring 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 throttling of Hingis at the French Open final this June was perhaps the most emphatic parting shot the game has ever seen. "

Some people just find it hard to get there. It seems Monica has been so close a number of times and kind of gone backwards. I don't think it has anything to do with lack of commitment or she doesn't try. For so long she was the one dominating every rally in every match so it didn't matter as much but now she realizes she needs to be able to run down balls but it's also hard to make a drastic change when your as injured as much as she is in her feet.

Do you think her fitness, or lack thereof has affected her feet?

Could be. Extra weight puts stress on the bones and joints.

I have a picture from Monica's exhibition a few weeks ago against Navratilova, and she's really thinned out. If someone can tell me how to post it, I will...

so lindsay got into better shape to battle with the best, but yet she doesn't beat them
when you hit the ball as well as Seles does, you don't really need to be in the best shape possible. but yeah if she was in superb shape, it would make her that much more of a threat

Monica has stated that she developed an eating disorder after the stabbing. That isn't unusual after a traumatic experience like the one she suffered. She wasn't fully fit when she returned to the tour in 1995 in part due to the fact that her return was planned then put off a few times before she actually did it. She finally just took the plunge before she changed her mind again, even though she wasn't quite ready.

I think she would have worked her way into condition had her father had not been diagnosed with terminal cancer so soon after her return. Karoli's losing battle with cancer took a far greater toll on Monica than either her fans or detractors like to admit. It is hard to understand the emotional toll that watching a loved one suffer and slowely die while you are helpless to do anything takes on a person unless you have experienced it yourself. And Karoli was the most important person in Monica's life, father, coach, best friend and the one person who was always there for her when she needed him.

For a year after Karoli's death in 1998, Monica was in deep mourning. Not surprisingly, that was when her physical condition was at its worst. By 2000, Monica was starting to get herself back in shape but by then the injuries had set in and every time she started to make progress, she would get injured. The injuries not only kept her from playing but also kept her from training properly.

Everyone who has ever worked with Monica has described her as one of the hardest working players they have ever known. I don't believe that it has been a lack of work or desire that has prevented Monica from achieving all that she could but rather a tragic series of events.

I hope that it isn't too late for her to make one last hurrah on the tour before she retires. She deserves to go out in style.

Thanks. Reason and fact are so pleasant.

Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

Some players have intense desire to be the best while competing on the court. On the other hand, some players have intense desire to be the best 24/7.

I dont know anyone who was better at competing during a match (at least early in her career) than monica

However, unfortunately, I dont think her intensity carried through to the gym and practice court as much as a navratilova for instance........

You have to realize that losing weight is not just a matter of determination. If Monica is genetically predisposed to be slightly overwieght, it might be very difficult for her to keep her weight off. There is an internal "fat thermostat" in our bodies and in some people it is slightly off so that they have to starve every day just to keep their weight normal.

From the photos at her exhibition is looked like Monica had lost quite a bit of weight. And that was just dieting and two weeks of practice. I think when we see her in Strasburg it will be even a bigger improvement.

In Monica's case I think some of it is a lack of detemination. Monica has admitted she hates going to the gym, and she likes fatty foods. A deadly combo. Monica has been held back ever since her stabbing because a lack of commitment to her fitness. However, if this is the only flaw we can find in Monica, then she's doing pretty well.
