Mary Pierce is AMERICAN?

Serena Williams cruises at Bausch & Lomb tennis
April 7, 2004

AMELIA ISLAND, Florida (Ticker) - Serena Williams picked up where she left off in Miami.

Williams, the No. 2 seed, began a quest for her second straight title with a 6-3, 6-1 rout of fellow American Mary Pierce in the second round of the $585,000 Bausch & Lomb Championship.

Williams returned to competitive tennis last week after missing eight months due to knee surgery and captured the NASDAQ-100 Open, her first title since last year's victory at Wimbledon.

Mary Pierce
Birthplace: Montreal, Canada
Grew up and raised in: USA
Competes Internationaly for: France
Curently lives in: Paris, France and Bradenton, Florida, USA
US and Canadian Citizen, and I'm assuming she must have citizenship for France as well since she competes for that country as well.

I don't know why she is not representing Canada!!!!!!!!
In France they have tennis players, here they don't.
I still like Mary Pierce.

France does have tennis players, French players just can't win slams. I like Mary too, but I do hope she will one day realize that she was born in Canada. We dont mind her speaking French at all.

Hmmm I have always heard her refered to as an American expatriate not Canadian. Kind of confusing I guess.

I would say all of that is a bit confusing...

No, that's ridiculous. Is one of Dokic's parents Australian? Any cultural/historical links to that country? Mary Pierce is French because she legitimately elected to play for France 14 years ago by virtue of having a French mother. But that doesn't detract from the fact that she spent her formative years in America and was born in Canada - in the French part, note!

This situation brings up a parallel one, Dokic's nationality. Dokic was Yugoslavian, then Australian, then potentially English, then back to ... Croatian? Serbian? Herzegovinan? ...I heard talks of her being or contemplating being Australian again ...What is she as of now?

BTW, Mary is de nato Canadian, de jure French, de facto (and de libido ) American.
