Amelia Island Round of 16 Predictions
Below, please find the round of 16 at Amelia Island. The players whose names are bolded are the ones I expect to win.
Justine Henin-Hardenne (1) vs. Conchita Martinez (16)
Considering Justine's first match and Conchita's somewhat solid play leading up to her 700th career victory, this would be considered a toss-up, but I expect Justine to previal, unless she serves like she was serving last night, then maybe Conchita has a chance.
Patty Schnyder (12) vs. Vera Zvonareva (8)
Patty is pretty good on green clay having beat Serena and Jennifer on this same surrace two years ago, but Vera is just as good on clay. However, Vera almost lost to Tina Pisnik due to her shaky serving and because she can be hot and cold, if Patty plays well, she can win, so I will give Patty the edge here.
Amelie Mauresmo (3) vs. Barbora Strycova
Barbara took out a pretty good clay court player in Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi today, but Amelie is so much better than Anna overall and really don't see Amelie having a problem here and should win in striaght straights.
Silvia Farina Elia (10) vs. Jelena Kostanic
Silvia had an easy win on Paola Suarez' doubles parnter, Virginia Ruano Pascual, today and Jelena, via a retirement by Elena Dementieva, has the mjaor upset of the tournament so far. Because I really don't know that much about Jelena, other than she had trouble, at times, holdling serve today, I will give the edge to Silvia to win.
Ai Sugiyama (6) vs. Paola Suarez (9)
Paola is pretty good on clay and I wasn't impressed by Ai's win tonight. Ai could have easily lost in striaght sets had she been playing a better player and Paola could be the person to cause an upset so if Ai's serving doesn't get better, Paola will win in straight sets.
Alicia Molik vs. Lindsay Davenport (4)
Alicia's had solid wins here so far, but Lindsay's win was solid too and is a top ten player and since I don't know that much about Alicia clay court record and I do know Lindsay's, I will give the edge to Lindsay to win in striaght sets.
Nadia Petrova (7) vs. Petra Mandula
Nadia, like Vera, can be hot and cold, but unlike Vera, can be prone to injury at any time. Petra is one of those sneaky players that can play good when you least expect it. Having said that, if Nadia can hold serve, I think she will win in straight sets, but if she can't, Petra might just have a chance at the upset.
Karolina Sprem vs. Serena Williams (2)
I don't think they have played before, but based on Serena's continued sucess after her 8 month layoff, I expect Serena to breeze though in staight sets, but if Serena's movment and serve are off, she could have a three set battle on her hands.
