Martina accepted the WC for Amelia Island after asking one for Miami...

MARTINA CLEARS AIR

Martina Navratilova, upon reading an item in The Herald about her decision not to accept a wild-card entry to NASDAQ, contacted the paper Sunday to explain her side.

Navratilova said she asked for a wild card and was told she would get one, but that as part of the deal she would be expected to do a news conference announcing her entry, an autograph session and a visit to the NASDAQ suite.

'They should have just said, `Yes,' but there were strings attached and I didn't think that was right, so I told them to take their wild card and give it to a younger player,'' she said.

Adam Barrett (director of the event) said he didn't feel the demands were too much to ask.

''As part of the wild card, we just wanted one of the greatest players ever to help promote the game,'' Barrett said. ``Maybe the way it came out upset her, but I hope she will consider playing here again next year. We will have a spot for her if she wants it.''

Since when did giving out Wild Cards only serve to benefit promotion?

If martina wanted to win a match or two in singles, the Nasdaq draw would have been a good option. It was much weaker than amelia island.
Perhaps she should have just sucked it up, and played.

The request for a press conference doesn't seem that unreasonable, and an autogaph session is not a big deal.
I might have had an issue with is the NASDAQ suite thing. Sounds too corporate.......

On the other hand, a big marquee name like martina, in a 128 draw should not come with any riders attached.
For the organizers, not to just count their blessings is kinda bad form. And considering the number of big names who didn't play, I bet the organizers were kicking themselves.

I guess in the end every one lost..... Fans, tourny and martina.

Come to think of it how the hell does that happen, doesn't navratilova have representitives to set the organizers straight and tell them what she willing to do and negotiate?

She probably would have met all the demands but I think she was ticked that the wildcard was conditioned upon anything....."HELLO, do you know who I am. I'm Martina"- they know now, too late..lol.
