Natasha Zvereva (Former Russian Federation member before they
broke Belarus from the Soviet Union) can play with a 1-handed backhand.
She's stronger and more confident with the 2 handed backhand. In fact
she had every shot in the book.
Getting back to Nat's 1-handed backhand. You should've seen it! Real
awesome stuff; but she did it more to put people off with a "Sabatini
type imitation. I guess it was more of "WTF!! Why the hell not!" and
did it more to bulls*t her opponent off their game with something
totally different to look at. I've seen it in a Hingis match, against LD,
in a match against Mary Pierce and even Conchita Martinez.
It was more of a real off the wall thing because it was either followed
up a drop shot from the baseline or some wacko tactic like (I kid you
not!) a charge to the net for a serve and volley move!
Actually, the 1-handed backhand had alot of depth; but you
should've heard the TV commentary when she threw that one
out her trick bag. It was alot " oh..no what is she doing? throwing
in 1-handed backhands? Is she serious?????"
When Nat did play a pure 1-handed backhand player like Sabatini,
she usually tried to charge net and do volleys! It worked alot of
times. One year at the YEC, she played Sabatini in a fantastic
match where she threw in everything; but the kitchen sink and
You have to remember back in early 1990's/mid 1990's. It was
sort of considered insane to play an all court game ala Roger or
Justine against solid two handed backhand baseliners like Monica
or forehand machines like Graf.
