I was reading a post in her score thread for her first win for 2016 and was surprised when I later looked up her results and realized how unlucky she is at slam MDs especially for a player who has been past 2R just once.

2010 FO - lt. to Hercog 36 06 in 1R - it's the only surface Hercog is relevant on
2011 W - lt. to [WC] Lisicki 46 26 in 3R - Lisicki beat Li and Bartoli on her way to the SF
2011 USO - lt. to Pous Tió 26 76 (12) 25 ret. in 1R
2012 W - lt. to Rus 57 63 in 1R - it was the year Rus got to 4R at FO and also won over no.5 seed Stosur in Wimbledon (I know Stosur is irrelevant on grass, but at least she was a top 5 seed back then)
2013 AO - lt. to [2] Sharapova 06 06 in 2R - Sharapova lost just 9 games prior to the semis, when she lost to Na Li
2013 FO - lt. to Keys 36 26 in 1R
2013 W - lt. to Soler Espinosa 61 46 16 in 1R
2013 USO - lt. to [7] Kvitova 26 63 16 in 1R
2014 AO - lt. to [8] Jankovic 16 26 in 1R
2014 FO - lt. to [28] Petkovic 36 36 in 1R - Petkovic reached the SF
2014 W - lt. to [22] Makarova 57 46 in 2R - Makarova reached the QF and got to the SFs in the next 2 slams
2014 USO - lt. to [16] Azarenka 76 46 61 in 1R
2015 FO - lt. to [7] Ivanovic 63 36 46 in 2R - Ivanovic reached the SF
2015 W - lt. to [17] Svitolina 63 36 26 in 1R - Svitolina was on the rise fresh off her first slam QF
2015 USO - lt. to [12] Bencic 75 67 36 in 2R - had 3 MPs
2016 AO - lt. to [7] Kerber 76 67 36 in 1R - had 1 MP, Kerber eventually won the whole event

If you are unseeded, there is nothing unlucky about losing to a good player in the first rounds.
It is actually supposed to happen.
When 18 out of 32 seeds were out within the first 2 rounds of AO and it is actually a trend, then drawing top 10 players or others who are going deep in 10 of your last 12 slams is truly unlucky. :p

These things even out. Should have closed against Kerber, had a chance to win a few rounds in that soft subsection

I mean, she gifted Pous Tió her only Grand Slam MD win of her career (on hardcourts no less) so she may have a mental block or something at the Slams :oh:

Despite her Melbourne run, Zhang Shuai still takes the cake as far as I'm concerned:

All MD First Rounds

2008 US Open (as a qualifier): lst. Kuznetsova 4-6, 2-6
2010 Roland Garros (as a qualifier) lst. Petrova 0-6, 3-6
2011 Australian Open: lst. Safarova 5-7, 6-4, 1-6
2011 Roland Garros: lst. Hantuchova 3-6, 3-6
2011 Wimbledon: lst. Kuznetsova 6-3, 3-6, 4-6
2011 US Open: lst. Cibulkova 3-6, 4-6
2012 Australian Open: lst. Wozniak 3-6, 3-6 (most dubious loss on the list)
2012 Roland Garros: lst. Kerber 3-6, 4-6
2014 Australian Open: lst. Barthel 6-7(4), 3-6
2014 Roland Garros: lst. A. Radwanska 3-6, 0-6
2014 Wimbledon: lst. Suarez Navarro 1-6, 2-6
2014 US Open: lst. Barthel 1-6, 2-6
2015 Australian Open: lst. Cornet 3-6, 2-6
2015 Roland Garros: lst. Ka. Pliskova 6-7(4), 4-6
2016 Australian Open: def. Halep 6-4, 6-3

Drawing 9 times in a row seeded player is unlucky (the streak is still alive). If she had won any of these matches she would have avoided meeting seeded players in next rounds though so it could be additional benefits if one beats such player though. The last 4 exits were after winning first set too, and the last two after wasting MPs.

Remember how Kimiko had to play Venus twice in a row at Wimbledon (because the first match was such a thriller)?

Random draws... sure.
