Manuela Maleeva Back Playing Tennis ?
February 20, 2004
ANTWERP, Belgium (AP) -- Kim Clijsters
beat Manuela Maleeva
7-6 (2), 6-2 Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Diamond Games.
The world No. 2 and home favorite will play Myriam Casanova, who beat Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Silvia Farina Elia of Italy advanced after fifth-seeded Patty Schnyder withdrew with a groin injury trailing 7-6 (6), 1-0. Elia faces Karolina Sprem , who defeated Czech Denisa Chladkova 6-4, 6-3.
Schnyder's withdrawal was just the latest setback for the tournament.
On Thursday, world No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne pulled out of the event because of a throat infection. Elena Dementieva also withdrew because of a shoulder injury.
Earlier, Venus Williams pulled out after aggravating a knee injury. Other withdrawals from the top 10 were No. 3 Amelie Mauresmo and No. 5 Jennifer Capriati. That leaves the way open for Clijsters to win her second tournament of the year after taking the Gaz de France in Paris last weekend. Cheered on by about 8,000 fans Friday, Clijsters broke Maleeva's serve twice early in the second and won the match with an ace.
Stupid sports writers.
