LOOKS like the greatest run in Slam history

It isn't, of course, but the names look sooo impressive.

back in 99, dementieva dokic and mauresmo were still newbies and certainly not as good as they have become now

A man may fight for many things. His country, his friends, his principles, the glistening ear on the cheek of a golden child. But personally, I'd mud-wrestle my own mother for a ton of cash, an amusing clock and a sack of French porn.

If that was the greatest run to win, this is the greatest run to a final:

Quote:
'00-R128
Quote:
Gala Leon Garcia (ESP) W 6-0 6-1
'00-R64 Kim Clijsters (BEL) W 4-6 6-2 6-2
'00-R32 Tamarine Tanasugarn (THA) W 6-2 6-1
'00-R16 Justine Henin-Hardenne (BEL) W 6-0 6-4
'00-QF Serena Williams (USA) W 6-4 6-2
'00-SF Elena Dementieva (RUS) W 6-2 7-6(5)
'00-F Venus Williams (USA) L 4-6 5-7

Except Leon Garcia that's a pretty good field of players to beat. But the reality is Kim and Justine weren't top players then....but they both did make slam finals the next year.

Looks an impressive run indeed but in reality the only one worth a mention was the win over Seles - seeing that Seles had despatched Graf in the previous round, had hammered Martina in Paris the year before and never lost in Oz until that point.

This one's not bad:
128: bt Sharon Walsh (finalist Australian Open 1979) 61 62
64: bt Jenny Walker 62 62
32: bt Betty Stove (finalist Wimbledon 1977) 36 62 63
16: bt Hana Mandlikova (US Open finalist, Australian Champ 1980, 1981 French Champ, Wimbledon finalist 1981) 67 63 61
QF: bt Wendy Turnbull (finalist at US 1977 French 1979, Australian 1980) 63 62
SF: bt Tracy Austin (reigning US Champion, 1981 US Champ) 63 06 64
F: bt Chris Evert (French Champ 1979, reigning French Champion, US Champ 1980, 1981 Wimbledon Champ) 61 76

Beating the champions at two fo the previous three (and the finalist in the third) plus the winners of the following five Grand Slams is pretty impressive.

(French Open 99) Not sure how many other players beat the #1, #2, and #3 players in the world to win a major, but Steffi did in 99 that has to be considered impressive...
R16 Anna*Kournikova*(RUS) W 6-3 7-6(4)
QF (2) Lindsay*Davenport*(USA) W 6-1 6-7(5) 6-3
SF (3)Monica*Seles*(USA) W 6-7(2) 6-3 6-4
F (1)Martina*Hingis*(SUI) W 4-6 7-5 6-2

JCap's win at Oz was an impressive run beating the women who had been the most succesful at Oz in the last 10+ years (those three ladies had won 8 of the last 10 Oz Opens
QF Monica*Seles*(USA) W 5-7 6-4 6-3
SF Lindsay*Davenport*(USA) W 6-3 6-4
F Martina*Hingis*(SUI)

STEFWHIT'S MILLATARY RANKS:
The Commander In Chief: Steffi Graf
General: Serena Williams
Admiral: Kim Clijsters
Lieutenant General: Elena Dementieva
Major General: Myskina

nominees for Brigadier General:
Venus, Golovin, Lindsay, Petrova, and Pierce

Dangerous newbies. The kind of newbies that after losing 1-6 2-6 come back to haunt you and destroy you 6-2 6-0 after just 5 months. Dokic did that to Hingis at Wimbledon 99. This is probably the most impressive grand slam run I've ever seen Specially because Hingis defeated great players, with different styles, all in 2 sets except Coetzer

I was going to post Steffis 99 French open run as well as the later rounds sure were impressive...she had Maggie Maleeva in round 1 as well....weird to think that only 5 years ago maggie was a first round foe for Steffi but i guess prior to seeding 100 players, you were bound to get a toughie in an early round....her 2 and 3rd rounds were against some stinkers though

on the contrary, at the time, e 99 run was a pretty easy ride through except for Monica. Dementieva and Dokic were barely out of nappies at the time! and we all know my granny could have played Hingis that day at Wimbledon and still won!

IMO, Steffis 99 RG run was awsome, as was Venus' Wimbledon 2000 run......

128WKveta PESCHKE (CZE)6-3 6-1 64WAi SUGIYAMA (JPN)6-1 6-4 32WNathalie DECHY (FRA)6-0 7-6(4) 16WSabine APPELMANS (BEL)6-4 6-4 QFWMartina HINGIS (SUI)6-3 4-6 6-4 SFWSerena WILLIAMS (USA)6-2 7-6 FRWLindsay DAVENPORT (USA)6-3 7-6

Hingis, then Serena and LInzi both in straight sets, with Sugiyama and Dechy thrown in for good measure. Thats pretty darn impressive!
