Sharapova joins tournament fashion show

Before she shows her moves on the tennis court, rising tennis star Maria Sharapova will take to the runway during a fashion show and luncheon Friday at the Racquet Club of Memphis.

The 16-year-old Sharapova is in Memphis to take part in the Cellular South Cup women's tennis tournament that starts Sunday.

This is the first year the fashion show has been a part of the Kroger St. Jude and Cellular South tennis tournaments, said Devin Donaldson, director of accounting with the Racquet Club.

"We're trying to expand and generate as much excitement as we can, and the fashion show is one of the newest additions to the tournament events," Donaldson added.

The blond and leggy Sharapova, who has been compared to fellow Russian tennis player Anna Kournikova, will join local models and St. Jude patients in the show that will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will include a three-course lunch with champagne.

The models will wear tennis gear and casual wear provided by the Racquet Club and the Shops at Saddle Creek.

Sharapova, who has a contract with Nike, will also be seen in her Nike-designed outfits.

Lori Ovitz, a professional makeup artist who has worked with celebrities for 20 years, volunteered to do the makeup for all the models.

Ovitz, in an interview from her home in Chicago, said she also decided to become a sponsor for the event because of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

"We really wanted to support St. Jude in any way possible," Ovitz said. "I've seen how uplifting something as simple as makeup is for cancer patients, especially the children cancer patients."

Ovitz, who has written a book called "Facing the Mirror with Cancer: A Guide to Using Makeup to Make a Difference," began working with child cancer patients when she volunteered to do makeup for kids and adult patients at Chicago hospitals.

Ovitz, who is also developing a line of makeup for cancer patients, said she is excited about the fashion show.

"This is such an opportunity, and I want to make the show special for everyone, particularly the children from St. Jude's," Ovitz said.

Tickets for the fashion show are $30 per person, or a table of 10 for $300.

A drawing for a $1,000 shopping spree at the Shops of Saddle Creek will be included in the $30 luncheon ticket price. A $20 donation to St. Jude will buy extra tickets for the shopping spree drawing.

Sharpie is much more glamourous than Kournikova. It's like
comparing Vogue to FHM. It's not surprising that teenage girls
prefer Dani and Sharpie over Kournikova.
