Right now, I seriously doubt that Davenport can be number one, or even 2.
Below is the chase points, as you can see Davenport is trailing Venus by 400 points. Martina Hingis will be number 4 at the year end with only 3946 points as she isn't playing any more for the rest of the season. As it stands, Venus is defending 200 points, Capriati 200 points and Davenport 700 points. So she has to do VERY well in her 3 events to end the year at number 2, and she has almost no chance at the top spot as Capriati will be earning points too.
01 J.CAPRIATI....... 4641
02 V.WILLIAMS...... 4128
03 M.HINGIS......... 3946
Right now, with Venus committed to 2 more events and Davenport to 3. They're both playing Linz and Chase. So, Venus just has to do better at both events than Davenport to stay ahead of Davenport, and that is highly possible. If Venus wins both Linz and Chase, then she'll be within 100 points of Capriati assuming Capriati does well at Zurich and Chase, but doesn't win.
So it is all very close, with Hingis being the confirmed #4 unless Davenport screws up badly.
