Trying to work the rankings

I've been setting up the rankings for the next release, as I do every week, but this week is proving to be a trial, since two big tournaments come off and only one goes on!

This wreaks havoc with the Best 17. For instance, Sugiyama "loses" 94 points this week, but as it turns out, it's 48 points from AO and 46 from PPO. Neither is in her Best 17 -- therefore she loses nothing!

Whereas someone like Rubin will lose her points from both AO and PPO, and will now have to be replaced with her Best 18th AND 19th for her lowest possible point total, but if AO surpasses either of those events (it pretty much will) I'll have to remember to knock off the Best 19th and not the Best 18th. This requires another column!

I swear, my stats background is taking a beating this afternoon! ;)

Okay. Here are where this week's Top 40 are standing for next fortnight's rankings at the moment. This means, where applicable:

Australian Open '03 is OFF
Pan Pacific Open '03 is OFF
Australian Open '04 (read: 2 points for everyone in the draw) is ON

Now, remember, the Next Off column is misleading this week. There are three types of players dealing with it:

1. Someone who indeed loses everything from their Next Off column. Example: Chanda Rubin will lose her points from AO and PPO because both are currently in her Best 17. In her case, AO '04 points will replace them AS WILL ANOTHER TOURNAMENT.
2. Someone who loses only some of their Next Off. Example: Nadia Petrova has 111 points in the Next Off column but will "only" lose 110 since the 1 point she gained at PPO is not currently in her Best 17, and therefore cannot be lost.
3. Someone who loses NONE of their Next Off. Example: Ai Sugiyama, as mentioned above, loses nothing this week, because her 94 points in the Next Off column are split into 48 AO/46 PPO, neither of which are currently in her Best 17 (wow...go Ai!) and therefore cannot be lost.

All players at this point can only GAIN points. What you will see are the LOWEST POSSIBLE TOTALS a player can have in 2 weeks. Of course, it doesn't mean that a player will gain points, and this is nothing new and has nothing to do with the stagger. For instance, Justine Henin-Hardenne loses 460 points from last year but automatically gains 101 points as her 18th best result becomes her 17th Best result and becomes part of her ranking. What this means, then, is that Justine has to surpass 101 points in Melbourne to increase her ranking.

So...without further ado, here are the post-AO rankings of the Top 40 players as they stand right now:

Code:
1 (1)	J. HENIN-HARDEN	6471.00

Not to be nitpicky or anything, but wouldn't Cara Black be in the Top 50 because she only loses 3 points and therefore blah blah blah :p

See, this is why you have to pick a stopping point ;)

 we all know Sprem will be top 30 after these two tournaments!

I've made a little program that does the calculations for me.

I have the rankings on a relational database, and I have information of the range of dates included. What my little program does is to add up the 17 best results within that range, including the latest result and excluding the points coming off. Since I take the points coming off from the WTA ranking it doesn't matter if it's one or more weeks coming off, I only need to adjust the initial date (in this case I will set up the initial date to the week after Tokyo).

It was a bit tricky to set that up properly.

I am currently redoing the program in C#, and it will be a lot more sophisticated, I am thinking of publishing a web service that will calculate the rankings and it will be accessible through the web.
