POINTS DUE WEDS 9TH APRIL 12.00PM - SOME PLAYERS HAVE NOT SENT POINTS SINCE WEEK 1, AND THEY ARE LOSING FIRST ROUND EVERY WEEK, SO THEY REALLY HAVE TO SEND NEW POINTS - EVEN THE BEST PLAYERS WHO WIN THE TITLE, GET TO FINAL ETC. SHOULD BE CHANGING POINTS - THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING YOU CAN IMPROVE!!
Lindsay Davenport has arrived in Antwerp and is looking to build on her recent good form, which saw her win the title in Paris last week. Having achieved a decent but unspectacular 3-2 record in her first events in Australia, Davenport showed what she was truly capable of last week in Paris. Her title run included straight set wins over No.6 Nicole Vaidisova and No.2 Gisela Dulko, and a thrilling 3 set battle with No.8 Agnes Szavay to finish the tournament. Her performances last week have brought her a new career-high ranking of No.9.
"I'm very excited with all that has happened in the last week or so. I have gone from being a debutante to one of the top players in the world. Last week helped my confidence alot and I feel I deserve to be in the top 10. It was a good tournament to get my career started. I can now look forward to the rest of the year."
Despite winning last week, Davenport is unseeded in Antwerp, and has a 1st round match with Daniela Hantuchova.
"I'm a little disappointed not to be seeded but that tells me there is still alot of work to do. It's going to be difficult to try and keep my run going, I need to stay really focused. It's a different pressure now as I now expect myself to go deep into these draws. Daniela will be a tough opponent I'm sure.
Looming in the 2nd round is a potential clash with No.3 and Australian Open finalist Ana Ivanovic, or Jessica Moore. Ivanovic beat Davenport 6-0 6-1 at the Australian Open. Davenport has never played Moore, but the two didn't have the best meeting in Australia, when Moore refused to play doubles with Davenport, saying she was 'too old and slow'.
"I'm not thinking about the 2nd round yet but of course it's going to be a difficult match. Ana is a tough opponent for me as we've already seen. I'd rather play Jess after what was said in Australia a few weeks ago. I might be slow but I think I've shown I'm still a good player. I was a bit dissappointed when she said that but I've now got a good partner in Dominika, so it's all good."
In the doubles draw, Davenport and Cibulkova will start against Anna Chakvetadze and Daniela Hantuchova. It will be a re-match of last week's clash, which Davenport and Cibulkova won 7-6 4-6 6-2.
"I love playing doubles with Dominika. She is really nice, we get along great. Our games work so well together. I have the power and she has the speed. It's a good combination. With her being the world No.1 and Australian Open champion and me winning in Paris, I think we have the potential to do really well."
Ioana Raluca Olaru training back in Romania. The nineteen year old is coming to Antwerp in search of her first win on the OWTT tour, after losing in three sets in first round of both the Australian Open and in Paris. Joint last in the rankings so far, Ioana spoke to us about how she is hoping her season could turn around here.
"It hasnt been a great season for me. I have two matches, but lost both. I was pretty competitve, both went to final sets, and nearly won in Paris, but it wasnt to be. Its a learning curve. Tactically, I think im still learning. There are a few girls out there who are playing awesmoe already and its going to be hard to catch them up, but hopefully with a few wins under my belt I can climb the ranks"
"I face Salerni in the first round. I dont know much about but Im hoping she will be my first win. Youve got to start somewhere and Im hoping my wins will start know. It would be great to go deep in this tournament but very, very difficult. Well see though. Physically I feel fine, it just depends on how my game holds up against the rest"
