Re: Charleston SF: Paylyuchenkova/Safarova d. Huber/Raymond 6-4 7-6
I have to say, the success of the Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova team has for me been the most unexpected surprise of the year in women's doubles for me. By a very big margin.
Beating Llagostera Vives/Parra Santonja and Mirza/Vesnina in Miami last week seemed totally bizarre but this week they have most definately proven Miami wasn't a fluke and it seems these two really are a good team.
Really quite hard to explain the success of this team as Safarova has always been one of the worst doubles players in the top 100. True, Pavlyuchenkova hasn't been all that bad as a doubles player and looking at her career results in doubles they are actually quite respectable, although I have to say most of her success has come when paired with quality partners like Schiavone, Rodionova, Kirilenko and Kleybanova. Additionally considering Pavlyuchenkova's current form in singles I certainly didn't see her being a threat in doubles right now.
But sometimes, completely unexpectedly, two players just click together, and it seems that is what's happened here. Given Pavlyuchenkova and Safarova's success this week and in Miami, I would now be very surprised if what started out looking like a very unlikely to succeed scratch partnership doesn't become something permanent. I think we have a new team here. Well done to them.
