Basuki is Back Too! [WTA Article]

JAKARTA, Indonesia -
Kimiko Date Krumm might have been the veteran making headlines in 2009, but she wasn't the only player nudging 40 who made inroads on the circuit. Indonesia's best-ever player, Yayuk Basuki - a mother of one who turns 39 on November 30 - also enjoyed success in the doubles comeback that began in March last year.

In 1991 Basuki became the first Indonesian player to win a Tour-level title, at Pattaya, which contributed to her being voted Most Impressive Newcomer in the Tour's annual awards; in fact, all six of the Tour titles she would eventually win were captured in Asia, while her best singles performance at a Grand Slam was a quarterfinal run at Wimbledon in 1997.

By the end of the 1990s Basuki had risen as high as No.19 in singles and No.9 in doubles. Along the way she scored wins over the likes of Gabriela Sabatini, Zina Garrison, Martina Hingis, Amélie Mauresmo, Lindsay Davenport and Mary Pierce. In 1996 and 1998 she received the WTA Tour Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Award, voted on by her peers.

The winner of nine Tour doubles titles, Basuki played regularly with Nana Miyagi, with whom she reached the semis at the US Open in 1993, and later with Caroline Vis. The Indonesian-Dutch duo qualified three times for the season-ending Championships (1996-98), upsetting the top-ranked team of Martina Hingis and Jana Novotna in the first round at Madison Square Garden in 1998.

Basuki married her coach, Hary Suharyadi, in 1994 and in September 1999 gave birth to their first child, Yary Nara Sebrio Suharyadi. She returned the following year to play the Tour and represent Indonesia at the Olympics for a fourth time.

After retiring from the Tour in 2004, Basuki worked as a coach, tennis commentator for TV and print media, and consultant to Indonesia's sports minister. She also served as a mentor to rising Indonesian star Angelique Widjaja under a Tour scheme.

Since making her second comeback Basuki has won six ITF Circuit doubles titles, mostly with fellow Indonesian Romana Tedjakusama, and earlier this month reached the final at a $100,000 event in Chinese Taipei with Riza Zalameda of the US. This week her doubles ranking is No.197.
Recently Basuki also partnered Widjaja (who retired last year but is still only 24) at the Xpro Open in Jakarta - where she was doing double duty as tournament director.

How far Yayuk/ANgie went in XPro Open Tourney in Jakarta?
Did they end up winning the title?

Thanks for posting. It's good to have her back on tour . I hope she can get her doubles ranking inside the top 100 by Wimbledon. It would be nice if she could have another shot at playing on grass

Yayuk Basuki is such a cool name, too

too bad they lost in SF but Erakovic/Tanasugarn is a good duo , and they both took their revenge from Kimiko in singles Kimiko won the tournament in singles btw

hopefully we'll keep seeing the Asian veterans around in 2010 with even better showings at WTA tours

I wish Widjaja was coming back. Now that's someone I would actually want to come back, instead of these veterans.

Sugiyama, Tu, Morigami, Srebotnik, Rubin, Pironkova, Chan, Razzano
