Will the Williams Sisters reach #1 in doubles?

Serena's withdrawal from Tokyo obviously means no doubles being played.

That leaves two possible events for 2009: Beijing and YEC.

The Williams Sisters can also get to #1 at some point in 2010 by defending Melbourne. If they were to defend Melbourne, they could pick up an event anywhere they'd like -- Dubai, Miami, Madrid, do better at the French ...

Race 2009:
Black/Huber 8500
Williams/Williams 6750

This means that if the Sisters only play YEC (and win), it will not be enough to put them into the #1 slots. A win in Doha is 1500 pts. They would need to play Beijing and fare well.

Do the Sisters reach #1 in 2009? 2010? Or do they not reach it at all?
[Poll closes after YEC and before 2010 season start for obvious reasons.]

I think they will reach #1 in 2010... this year they'll win the YEC

21 and counting...

Would be an accomplishment for them but they only want Slam titles especially the French

I think they wanted both: #1 and slams and that's why they committed to playing all 4 this year. Since Day 1, they've said they want to play together in Doha. Sly way of saying they want to be #1.

i don't see how they will do it unless they look to do it. right now they just seem to want to win the slams but those alone wont give them the #1 ranking.

if they set the #1 ranking as a target then yes easily, they would only need to add 4 tournaments to the schedule next year (miami, madrid, canada and china) and they would gain enough points from these plus the slams and YEC to be #1.

It will be hard to choose the "team of the year" this year.

Sugiyama, Tu, Morigami, Srebotnik, Rubin, Pironkova, Chan, Razzano

Hardly, Venus and Serena won it in 2000 by only playing Wimbledon, USO and Olympics and winning W and Gold, while making USO semis before giving a walkover. They should definitely get it regardless if they win YEC.

I think next year they will, if they defend AO and win something else kind of big. But if they play Beijing then you KNOW they want #1.

I felt like their intent for the number 1 ranking was made clear by their victory in Stanford.

Hope they play Beijing unfortunately, with Venus having the slightly problematic knee tendonitis, it seems doubtful.

It is really quite simple, enter a few normal tournies and they'll be no.1.

And I'm guessing they'll be players of the year.

Which means Serena would (likely) win both prizes, singles and doubles

I think with her serve and her athleticism, her power, her court mobility, I just think when she’s on, she’s the greatest player we’ve ever seen, ever. Now, whether her record is the greatest remains to be seen because she hasn’t retired yet. But I think she is really the greatest player. I have seen Martina and Steffi at their best. There are little chinks in those players’ armor, but it was a different era, where you didn’t need to be the perfect player.

They're not looking to do it? They said since January they wanted to qualify for Doha, they entered (and won) Stanford .. Pretty clear to me they want to do it. I think in their minds they thought if they could win the slams and win Doha, #1 would come. They just need to do well in Beijing and it is right there for them.

Playing a tour event and also playing doubles is hard for scheduling and resting, especially when you're a top player reaching the later end of the week.

Re: Will the Williams Sisters reach #1 in doubles?

Why does Serena want to make it to #1 in doubles but not singles? If she could hold both simultaneously it'd be another testament to her greatness.

And if your life were gold, how long do you think you'd stay living?

The Sisters are not in the Beijing draw. 2010 it is.

I don't think they would have entered Stanford or that other tournament they won if they didn't want the #1 ranking. I think injury has gotten in the way for both at this point. They are both probably targetting a high end to the year in singles after their losses at the Open.
