Re: S2 Wk.1 Hopman Cup-Perth(MUST SEND NEW POINTS)(GROUPINGS POSTED)
YEC Champion, Sharapova Arrives Down Under
Perth, Australia - Maria Sharapova won the EWTA's first Year Ending Championship just last month and has accepted an invitation to the prestigious Hopman Cup event held in the beautiful city of Perth in Australia. She will represent her home country Russia partnering Dmitry Tursunov. Russia is seeded second despite Sharapova being the top player to play. They are in the second group and will open up the tournament against the Slovak Republic pairing of Daniela Hantuchova and Dominik Hrbaty. Fourth seeds Japan and Denmark rounds out the group.
Sharapova arrives at the hotel she will be staying in Perth
Sharapova arrived today, 1 week before the event starts to get used to the courts. This will be the first event in Maria Sharapova's schedule and is looking forward to her first Australian Open as she missed out last year's first grandslam with an ankle injury. Maria Sharapova had a successful season, ending the year as the number 3 player, despite only winning 2 titles. One in Charleston and the other the big Year Ending Championship.
Luckily we caught up to Maria and got a one-on-one interview with her.

First of all congratulations on your YEC win
It was a good win, especially you know, with the top players there.
Yeah, it was. I mean, I came in without any expectations. I just went in there for the last event of the year and I was just going to give it my best. And give it my best was what I did.
You certainly was at your best, your best of the whole season you think?
Ohh I don't know about that. I mean, at Charleston I had a pretty good run. You know, beating top players also. I didn't drop a set at Charleston and dropped a few in Doha. But I don't know, you know. I have improved my game a lot, so I am a more improved player. And I think other players have improved as well. So yes, I think it was my best form of the year.
So, coming into the Hopman Cup in your best form, do you feel confident?
Yeah, I have a lot of confidence. This event is going to be so much fun and I'm not going to put pressure on myself, you know. I mean I will do my best, especially in the doubles with Dmitry, I don't want to let him down. I think the most fun is going to be the doubles.
Did you see the trophies yet? You were practicing on the court and you should've walked past it on the way.
Oh yes.. the diamond encrusted balls. They look sooooo good. I was just going to break the glass and take it. They are so beautiful. *laughter*
Is that going to be a motivation for you?
Oh yeah.. definitely. Who wouldn't want one of those in their bedroom, you know. *laughter*. Yes I think displaying those beautiful tennis balls will motivate a lot of the players. I JUST WANT THEM SO BADLY!
Being the top player in the event, does it put more pressure on you?
No, I just like to think about what's going on the court. I don't care if I'm 1 or 60 and it doesn't matter if my opponent is 1 or 60, if I play my best, I know that I can win against anyone.
It's been nice talking to you. We'll catch up next time.
Yeah sure. Thanks guys.
