Amelia Island: Will Venus defend?
Henin-Hardenne, Capriati, Seles Headline Bausch & Lomb Championships
By Tennis Week
Justine Henin-Hardenne was the 2002 Bausch & Lomb Championships runner up. In April, the fourth-ranked Belgian will return to Amelia Island to make another run at the tournament title.
Australian Open semifinalist Henin-Hardenne, Jennifer Capriati, Monica Seles and Anna Kournikova are among the prominent players who have committed to playing the 24th annual Bausch & Lomb Championships, scheduled for April 14 - 20 at Amelia Island Plantation.
A year ago, Henin-Hardenne held a 6-2, 4-0, 40-15 lead over top-seeded Venus Williams in the final before losing her nerve and ultimately the match as Williams roared back to earn a 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) victory.
It will be the fifth appearance at the event for Capriati, whose best showing came in her 1993 debut when she reached the quarterfinals before falling to South Africa's Amanda Coetzer. The 26-year-old Capriati, who last played Amelia Island in 1999, is seeking her first tournament title since winning the 2002 Australian Open.
Celebrating its 24th anniversary, the Bausch & Lomb Championships is the second oldest American event on the WTA Tour. For daily ticket, box seat and package information call (800) 486-8366 or visit the tournament web site at Bausch & Lomb Championships.
