I'm a very concerned fan right now. I'm just feeling for Venus, but she just doesn't seem to care. She looked happy in all her losses and there is something wrong with that.
This is the time in Venus' career where she has to wonder what she has to do to beat Serena. You think she would have realized that after her third loss to her at Wimbledon. Venus is never one to lose to a player two times in a row, except early on in her career. But, Venus has lost to Serena FIVE times in a row. You would have thought that Venus figured it out after a few of those matches, but she just doesn't seem she has.
She constantly talks about how good Serena was during all those matches, but let's face it, she wasn't that great. It was Venus who gave them ALL away. She just failed at the most miserable times. She just totally broke down in her matches against Serena in the worst possible time.
French Open, Venus was up 5-4, serving for the set. What happenned?? She played a terrible game and ended up dropping the set. Never recovered after that.
Wimbledon, Venus played a bad tie-break. Again broke down in a crucial moment at 6-7 3-4, playing a bad service game, causing Serena to serve for the match.
US Open, was going on serve in the first set, until their was a double break for 4-4, then Serena broke Venus again to serve for the first set. Venus totally went away in the second, but just when she looks like she is getting back in the match, what happens? She gets broken for the match AGAIN.
And now Aussie Open. What happened?? Venus served for the first set at 5-4 and played ANOTHER terrible service game to drop the game. What happened in the tie-break? Venus literally left a ball go that she was literally 2 feet away from. In the third set, again Venus brumbled under the pressure to lose her serve for the match. DF's, Forehand UFE, and a lack of a first serve all costed her the match. Those three things is what Venus has always had trouble with, and it seems she still does.
What happened with Venus during the OZ Final?? Did Serena step it up, and just play too good? The answer is NO. Venus took about 10 steps back from the level she was playing against Henin-Hardenne and in the Doubles Final. She served around 90% in the Doubles Final, how come such a dramatic fall in first serves?? The conditions were exactly the same. Nerves?? I have no idea, they never claim to be nervous.
IMHO, Venus was just not aggressive. She just seemed to hit Serena's second serve back mid-paced and right up the middle and short in the court. What happened? Well, Serena took control of the point. I did not see Venus' true aggression until the third set when I finally saw her go for it and hit it harder.
The forehand, has there been improvement? Honestly, I do think there has been improvement, but it still breaks down. And I just don't understand why. The last set, Serena continually hit the ball to it, and Venus just kept spilling on the UFE.
Second Serve?? Too short in box, slow, and not close enough to the lines, and still too many DF in important moments.
What about Mentality?? It was obvious that Serena's backhand is not as good as the forehand, but yet, Venus played the forehand on all of the important points. Venus served relatively ever second serve to Serena's forehand. Why is that?? Doesn't Venus realise that that is the side with more winners. Sure the backhand may be more consistent, but that is Venus' chance to take control of the rally. It just seemed that Venus hit the ball constantly to Serena's forehand. It's trange that Serena was able to catch on towards the end of the match by hitting her serve to Venus' Forehand (her definite weakness.) However, Venus didn't catch on to hit it to Serena's weakness of the back hand.
Net play?? I noticed that thre were many balls that Venus should have came in on but didn't, especially the one's Venus hit out wide to Serena's forehand. Vens should have realised that Serena loves the crosscourt forehand, and that that is her time to come in and put it away. It was just strange thinking from Venus this entire match.
Desire?? Hmmm... can never really tell with Venus. I think she has very little. I think she is more happy to see Serena hold up the trophy than herself. I think that it is evident from her press conferences when she says she will always be happy for Serena if she wins it, and by the fact she says that Serena played great, with in all actuality she was terrible.
VENUS: Step it up, learn from your mistakes like you have done so many times in the past. I LOVE YOU, and ALWAYS will. You just need to fight out there and you have to have belief in yourself that you can honestly beat Serena. I just don't see that from you, but I definitely think you can.
GO VENUS!! TAKE THE REST OF 2003 BY STORM!!
