Hey Elke!

If you have the article in electronic form, I'd be happy to translate it for you. I have the rest of the week off anyway

Hi Tinne!
this is the Dutch text, it's not available on their website.....

By Ben Herremans, sportmagazine, 27/11/02

Lleyton: 'We weten allebei welke eisen toptennis stelt.

TING! (het belletje van de lift!)

I hope you like it!
I know it's a lot of work and already an BIG thank you in advance!

Elke, a big for copying this long article...
Such a work! But to save time next time, do ask me if you can get hold of me at that moment because I have access to the electronic texts of this magazine. It takes no time to copy and paste then, though.

And thanks a lot for willing to translate this, Tinne! Great of you too!
Enjoy your time off, Tinne!

News from today in Belgian media:

The Clijsters effect

The Clijsters effect is still working. The Flemish Tennis Federation (VTV) has registered 12000 new members in 2002, reaching a total of almost 131000 members!
This an unseen increase for the already biggest sports federation in Flanders. In 2001 VTV had 4000 new members, which was already the then biggest increase since 1992.

Then something else: Belgium hasn't decided yet re the venue of the next Fed Cup matches:

three venues are still in the running:
- Kuipke in Ghent
- the Sportpaleis in Antwerp (home of the Diamond Games in Feb)
- and last but not least the Expodroom in BREE, in the backyard of Kim

Bree can welcome 3000 people (seats) and has 2 to 3000 potential standing places.

A funny little tidbit before duty calls me again:

Kim of course will play in Antwerp next February (tickets on sale, btw). Venus will come to Antwerp again ( diamonds! ), Serena won't!

But as the Tokyo tournament (week prior to Antwerp) is having quite some troubles to get commitments, the WTA had called Lei Clijsters to ask if Kim would play. According to the report in La Libre Belgique and La Dernière Heure, Lei would have told the organiser of the Antwerp tournament that he replied the WTA that Kim had to come home (after the Australian Open) to take care of the dogs...

a really last thing for now LOL:

Kim will also do a tennis clinic for 5000 kids during the Antwerp tourney (with Justine btw).

And the first days of the tourney 8000 kids may call themselves lucky: they may attend the first rounds on Monday and Tuesday(all of already selected schools).

TR.NET TOP 20 WOMEN: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 25

2002: The women's year-end Top 20
By Matthew Cronin
********************

Based on final 2002 Sanex WTA rankings

1. Serena Williams: She's the 2002 cat's meow, oncourt and off. Serena played better than anyone has since Hingis in '97, no small feat. Now, can she score four Slams straight Down Under? Only her trainer knows the answer to that.

2. Venus Williams: Being the very obvious No. 2 is not good enough for V, who needs to go back to the drawing board and pencil in a few new consistent elements in her game, like an effective second serve and willingness to come to net during tough points.

3. Jennifer Capriati: When the blue chips are on the table, JCap plays with tremendous heart. But she needs to improve five percent all-around to be able to trump Serena again.

4. Kim Clijsters: Post injury, Kimmy was the most improved player on tour (along with Amelie Mauresmo). She has Slam winner written all over her and after beating a tired Serena in LA, has to like her chances Down Under a whole bunch.

5. Justine Henin-Hardenne: As easy as it is to like Henin's fight and wide array of shots, it s just as easy to wary of her very fragile physique. Her new hubby needs to help her take better care of herself.

6. Amelie Mauresmo: If not for a bad knee injury, Mauresmo very likely would have ended the year ranked No. 4. Hopefully, this Frenchwoman will recover well and continue her serve-and-volley climb towards the top.

7. Monica Seles: Monica, when are you going to retire? ... Don't you think it's time you retired? (Just kidding).

8. Daniela Hantuchova: So much potential but not enough apparent oncourt joy. If Dani doesn't fall in love with her sport again, she may never be a true primetime player.

9. Jelena Dokic: Speaking of lack of love for the game, is there a more joyless player to watch these days than Jelena? The only time we see her smile is when she's on Enrique's arm.

10. Martina Hingis: Even though she's already a Hall of Famer, there's lot left for Hingis to accomplish. But, if she's lost her drive, there's no reason to come back.

11. Anastasia Myskina: Just when we thought that Myskina had better nerves than Anna and Elena D., she collapses at the year-end championships. It must be something in the Moscow water.

12. Lindsay Davenport: Are three Slam titles enough for Lindsay? Certainly not and she'll make a strong run at a fourth in 2003.

13. Chanda Rubin: Still smarting from her loss to Venus at the US Open. If she really wants to make a huge impact on tour, Rubin needs to pound her chest a little more.

14. Magdalena Maleeva: Don't you just love it when a player wakes up just before the sun sets on her career and she begins to play likes she's digging herself out of a grave? That's what Maggie did in 2002.

15. Patty Schnyder: Just when it was thought it was time to close the book on this lefty's volatile career, Patty steps up to the plate again. If she can stop framing balls at key moments, the top 10 is not out of the question.

16. Anna Smashnova: When you consider the fact that this grinder was unable to hit a single winner in her loss to Serena in LA, its even more remarkable that Smashnova ended the year in the top 20.

17. Silvia Farina Elia: Just imagine how popular women's tennis would be now in Italy if the 30-year-old Silvia showed the same dedication she did in 2002 in 1992?

18. Alexandra Stevenson: Alex holds the title as the WTA's most enigmatic player: she was terrific indoors and a horror show at the Slams.

19. Elena Dementieva: This multi-talented Russian found more ways to lose tight contests this year than Jana Novotna in her prime.

20. Nathalie Dechy: Her lack of upper body strength and belief against elite players is what's holding this well-conditioned Frenchwoman back.
