St. Petersburg, Florida – The WTA Tour announced today that Justine Henin-Hardenne has been named Player of the Month for April, as voted on by the International Tennis Writers’ Association. This is the first time Henin-Hardenne has been selected by ITWA for the monthly award since the program’s inception in January 2001.
In April, Belgium’s Henin-Hardenne won the Family Circle Cup title in Charleston, South Carolina defeating world No. 1 Serena Williams in the final. As the No. 2 seed, Henin-Hardenne halted Williams’ undefeated streak at 21 consecutive matches along with Williams’ quest to win four consecutive titles this season. Henin-Hardenne was making her first appearance in Charleston and by winning the title, the 20 year old increased her career WTA Tour singles titles to eight. This was Henin-Hardenne's second title of 2003, winning Dubai in February. This was also her second career Tier I tournament title and her first title in the United States.

Members of the International Tennis Writers’ Association select the Player of the Month. ITWA is a worldwide body dedicated to improving communication between journalists, players and the sport’s governing bodies to the general benefit of the sport. Strict qualifications are required for membership. ITWA members must cover at least 14 tournaments including three Grand Slams over a two-year period and must derive the majority of their income through reporting or broadcasting about tennis. It is estimated that the 90 ITWA members reach 73 million people on either a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
