Eastbourne match reports

Alexandra Stevenson

Alex is a big, tall, strong and powerful player. The conditions were horrendous, it was grey, blowing a gale, the wind was swirling so much on court it was almost impossible to serve. Alex has a strong, even fantastic backhand. Daniela's tactics were confusing to say the least. She constantly played to her backhand and was getting passed far too frequently. Because of the windy conditions, this was not a great game to watch as both players struggled. Both services seemed to be broken regularly and Dani showed the occasional flash of brilliance but more often than not, relied on UE's by Alex to win the point. There were more errors than winners in this game. The first set was a tense, but even affair and the tiebreak queen sorted matters out winning it comfortably. Howerver, it should be said that she made a mess of things far too often in the first set by constantly playing to Stevensons backhand. I just couldn't understand these tactics, but she got away with it in the end.

The second set seemed a much more comfortable and controlled effort by Dani, and although she stuttered a little bit towards the end, she held on to win the match.

This was a good fighting performance by Dani. She needed to be strong against a power player like Alex, and although she couldn't match her for power, she won it with skill and artistry. It was tough going at times but she played well enough and showed enough commitment when things weren't going her way. Unfortunately, this wasn't to be the case in the next game.

Conchita Martinez

I hate to say this, but this was a truly dismal effort by Dani. When things weren't going her way in the Stevenson match, she fought harder to make sure things turned in her favour. In this game, there was no fight. Everyone knows how Conchita plays. She just slices everything back with the backhand and then once she's opened you up, bang!

To Daniela's credit, she tried all sorts of tactics but nothing worked. She tried serve and volley which was successful only occasionally. She tried baseline slogs followed up with some net approaches, in fact she tried everything to break Conchita down, but we all know what a good steady player she is. She just kept returning everything Dani threw at her and the body language from Dani was not good. No matter how hard she tried, Conchita was far too good for and it was sad to see that Dani just didn't have either a game-plan or a game good enough to beat her.

With this constant failure to break her down, her shoulders dropped, she kept huffing and puffing at Nigel, and in the end, she just gave up. There was no fight there, no determination to turn fortunes around and the look of defeat on her face came far too early for me, as if it was a foregone conclusion.

If Dani really is to be established as a top ten player, she needs to have a game that is good enough to match players like Martinez. At the moment, while she can almost match the power of someone like Venus (I said almost as she put up more of a fight against her in AO) by slogging it out from the base line, she cannot match the deft touches and guile of someone like Martinez.

Anastasia Myskina and Evgenia Koulikovskaya

For those of you who don't know Evgenia, she is the one who is ambidextrous (which means she can make a cup of tea while doing the ironing at the same time, sounds like my kinda girl!). She can also serve left handed and play right handed ground strokes. Although this sounds good in theory, in practice it's not much use if you're not a very good player. By far, the best player of the quartet was Anastasia, Dani came a close second and Chanda had an off day by hitting far too many shots too long.

This was a good game on a warm evening and after losing out on a first set tiebreak, our girls finally got to work on the EK serve, breaking it at least four times in the next two sets. This was the first time I had seen Dani play with Chanda, and although they are by no means an accomplished doubles act, they do seem to have an understanding, and this was shared on the practice courts too with several long sparring sessions.

The opponents in the QF failed to show up through fear of an annihilation, although the official excuse was that Maleeva had injured a thigh. The next doubles game would show where our girls really do lie in the scheme of things.

Lindsay Davenport and Lisa Raymond

Everyone knows that these two are a well established doubles team with numerous titles to their names and so it came as a great surprise to me that after a 1-6 drubbing in the first set, our girls showed them what it's all about and won the second set 6-4.

The first set was much closer than the scoreline suggested. There were some great rallies with all four players playing well. Dani showed some great touches at the net which she could do well to use in her singles games. There was tremendous spirit in the second set to come back after the first, but then the 2 L's stepped up a gear again in the final set.

I was very proud of Daniela (and Chanda) after this game. They had distinguished themselves very well against a world class doubles act. They were expected to be beaten easily but taking them to three sets was an achievement in itself.

I think there can be a lot to hope for for Dani and Chanda at Wimbledon.
