MASPALOMAS, Gran Canaria (Reuters) - After breaking into the world's top 10 for the first time this year, winning the Fed Cup with Slovakia would be the perfect end to 2002 for Daniela Hantuchova.
The tall, stylish 19-year-old, who won the first WTA tour singles title of her career at Indian Wells this year, has been the main force behind Slovakia's march to this weekend's Fed Cup final, where they will meet Spain.
"I've had a really exciting year, everything has been incredible for me," Hantuchova said. "But winning the Fed Cup would be a really perfect way for me to end the year."
Having cracked the top 10 for the first time -- she will be at number eight when the rankings are released Monday -- Hantuchova will fly to Los Angeles after the final to compete in the season-ending Home Depot Championships, an event for the leading 16 singles players and top eight doubles pairings.
That achievement would be enough to make 2002 a great year for most players, but Hantuchova said it would boost Slovakian tennis even more if they beat Spain.
"If we win, I believe it would be something really special. Playing for your country gives it even more pressure, but it's something I like and to play Spain in their home country will be a great experience."
Slovakia will be appearing in their first Fed Cup final, having beaten Italy 3-1 in the semi-finals Thursday.
Hantuchova recovered from the loss of her opening singles against Francesca Schiavone to beat Silvia Farina Elia before Janette Husarova clinched victory with a straight-sets win over Schiavone.
Their previous best showing in Fed Cup was a semi-final appearance in 1999, though they have only been playing as Slovakia since 1994 following the division of the former Czechoslovakia.
Husarova will open Slovakia's title bid when she plays former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez Saturday, with Hantuchova due to take on Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario
