Re: [Who? What? Where?] - Week 19 - New Haven (G1) (Draws, Questions)
Laura Robson (GBR) d. (1) Anna Chakvetadze (RUS) 16 62 75
A big win for Laura after a few dissapointing weeks on tour, Chakvetadze stays number 1 but needs to tidy up her game ahead of next weeks US Open.
(8) Karolina Sprem (CRO) d. (Q) Lilia Osterloh (USA) 62 60
Lilia qualified with two tough victories, and it seemed to have taken it out of her. Karolina hit convincingly from the baseline and played aggresively throughout.
(6) Maria Sharapova (RUS) d. Lindsay Davenport (USA) 16 62 75
A return to form for Maria who has slipped in the rankings of late, Lindsay came out all guns blazing with her big forehand causing most damage. Maria soon regrouped and played a clever match in the end.
Kim Clijsters (BEL) d. (4) Elena Vesnina (RUS) 76 06 61
A huge win for Kim who has been in very poor form recently, losing in the first round 3 times back-to-back. The Belgain showed fine consistancy and was too powerful for Vesnina today.
(3) Yanina Wickmayer (BEL) d. Daniela Hantuchova (SVK) 76 63
A tough match to take for Hantuchova, she dominated her service games in the first set whilst Wickmayer had to fend of heaps of break point oppurtunities. In the tie-break the Belgain raised her game and continued on from there.
(5) Elena Baltacha (GBR) d. Shuai Zhang (CHN) 61 16 75
Baltacha played solidly throughout, and Zhang was showing strong form aswell ahead of the US Open. The Brit started brightly, but Zhang played near perfectly in the second set. The final set looked to be going Zhang's way but Bally battled back and stole it.
(7) Alona Bondarenko (UKR) d. Tatiana Golovin (FRA) 76 67 76
An amazing scoreline, though some pretty scrappy tennis at times from both. Golovin's emotions got the better of her missing match points in the final set. Bondarenko needs to be much better for the next round.
Selima Sfar (TUN) d. (2) Su-Wei Hsieh (TPE) 60 75
The second time this year the Tunisian has rumbled Hsieh, Selima played a fantastic match and was eager to come forward in most rallies. Hsieh was clearly not at her best, and left the court swifly after the match.
