It's incredible how a shot so important being so despised by the players and coaches.

I imagine that a 5 years old doesn't feel very attracted to this shot as is normal.
I practiced rugby, and if the coach is not watching us, everyone wanted a ball to ourselves,
and do that which gave us more pleasure... we ran slamming each other to the ground.
Five minutes without coach was a real mess.
So coach's job to make him understand the importance of service in the court,
but also in his future as a player.
I think there is also a correlation between the importance coaches give to the serve and the surface/courts that predominate in a certain country.

Players of countries where Hard Courts or grass dominate usually have a better serve than players from countries where clay is dominant, even up to today.

Has there ever been a male Italian ATP player with a good serve, for example? Has there ever been an American ATP Top 100 player with a disastrous serve? I don't recall any since I started following the sport.

I'm pretty sure all coaches know about the importance of the serve, but if you are only playing on clay courts with your young protégé, then there are things that may seem more important to them at first.

Re: Alexandra Cadantu

Her Baku section:

(6)Polona Hercog (SLO) v Galina Voskoboeva (KAZ)
Eleni Daniilidou (GRE) v Q
(wc)Kamilla Farhad (AZE) v Mandy Minella (LUX)
(4)Alexandra Cadantu (ROU) v Michaella Krajicek (NED)

Tough that she meets Michaela right away. 1-all against her, but this is their first meeting on hardcourt.

BARBIE
is coming for your towel, too.

Re: Alexandra Cadantu

This is going to be interesting.

I'm really excited to see how she will play on Hard Court now. Her match against Knapp made me more optimistic as she was able to go toe to toe with Karin's powerful game on a rather quick clay court absorbing the pace nicely for most of the match.

The match against Krajicek will be similar. She needs to stay in the rallies as long as possible. The hot temperatures should help her as well.
Krajicek already played a tournament in Beijing on Hard this week, but eventually ended up losing to pusher Zhang with a devastating scoreline.

Her road to the QF is a complete joke. WTA draws don't get much easier than that.

Going further would be a nice surprise, losing earlier would still show her having some serious deficits on Hard Court. I mean she is #70 now, hardly a world beating position, but one that already hints in view of Top 50.

Re: Alexandra Cadantu

In all honesty I believe she has a game that works best on fast surfaces when on, but has a much more balanced outcome on clay (it reminds me so much of Flavia's for istance), she should go quite deep here

Re: Alexandra Cadantu

I agree.

In my opinion her inaptness on Hard is more related to a lack of match practice on this surface than anything else. There is really no obvious reason why her game should work so much better on clay than on Hard, it's not that she is just playing with topspin and drop shot combos.

not at all and the way she can counter-punch against big hitters makes her game much more apt to fast surfaces (she did well indoor indeed!)
I also believe that her 2nd serve can be less attackable on a fast surface, because it's quite a powerful shot (if you compare it to most 2nd serves on tour), it lacks any particular spin or slice to be effective on clay, but on hard it should jump lower and remain fast...

Re: Alexandra Cadantu

once she adjusted to the surface she was on a roll 11 DF and still 6-0 6-3 in the last two sets
