I mean, I was just watching at Agnieszka Radwanska activity in juniors and saw she was beaten by Mihaela twice - 2:6 2:6 and 2:6 4:6. How come 4th ranked junior who beat such players like Radwanska, Cirstea, Lisicki, Glatch, Knapp, Paszek, Shvedova now simply sucks? Did she have an injury or private problems or simply couldn't make a progress?

She definitely didn't get to rest well & recover after Hobart... she's spraying UE's left and right. Her attitude is not right either (but that could be on the same account of tiredness).

Not that she stood a chance against Woz in the first place, so I suppose I should give her credit for at least trying. But if her focus isn't there, most of her attempts end up long or into the net. :(

LE: 26 36, in what mostly seemed like just a warm-up session for Wozniacki. With the exception of that one break, it was a lot of "1 great point, 3 bad points" series from her today. :[ Better luck next time.

In my opinion you guys are too harsh on her

In general I agree, but this is/was a special situation

Mihaela had a very tough, exhausting week in rainy Hobart !
Not only physically, but also mentally a very hard week and final !
(in case you don't know even the final had many interruptions due to rain)
And add to that, that losing a final is never fun. Of course you are pissed, that's normal
Then in this mood + tired she had to play on next day AO R1 vs #2 seed Woz !
Former world #1 Wozniacki was a really very unlucky draw at Aus Open

Finally now Mihaela has time to recover and rest (also mentally)
Let's see if her attitude is the same in next weeks under normal circumstances

^ I think I already said here or on GM that it might have been the Hobart + travel tiredness as well,... but still... It's like her unfortunate injuries didn't allow her to be a "young" player on tour, and it's as if she's "reliving" that youth with the tantrums of 10 years younger girl now. :p

As Haleptard said: Fine, if at least it would help her. But it clearly didn't. I won't stone her for this, but it's an area of improvement for her if she wants to do better. ;)

Aus Open

R1 vs #2 (and eventual champion) Wozniacki

So Mihaela lost to the eventual champion in AO R1. This was another unlucky draw

It was a mix of unlucky draw and wrong mentality/attitude. As seen with Fett the next round (who really lacked brain when it mattered), Mihaela would have actually had a chance if she would have approached this differently.

I hope she drew some lessons out of this and that someone called her out on that body language and teenage tantrums throughout the match. She should (and she can) be better than that.

I actually expected her to do good in this match and even win. Ostapenko tends to lose matches against players she is considered favorite... but more than the result, Mihaela played really, really good. Great performance... probably her best match so far in WTA.

Glad also she seemed much more positive in her general behavior on court this time :yeah: Last time, in Midland, she was just :help: :help:

Mihaela lost a very winnable IW R1 to Brady (in spite of a virtual bagel to win the 1st set) 63 46 26

Granted, I haven't seen the first set to have many positive impressions to quote. I just understood from the commentary that she was much better in painting the lines.

But this is what I saw from the middle of the second set (for her coach, but mostly her to think about):
- bad attitude and pointless frustrations (how's that gonna help you?... just f*cking move on; thing about how you're gonna win the next point, not why/where/how you lost the previous)
- pretty lazy serves... at least a couple of them in every service game, just enough to give Brady the extra points she needed to get the break
- some avoidable unforced errors: even if some were due to tiredness, when you have Brady behind baseline in a corner of the court, why send the ball to her when the rest of the court was all yours?
- and probably the most painful somehow: when she had BP in the final game, Brady sent that ball which was heading right in the middle of the tramlines (way out... like half a meter out!!!). How could she not realize and still went for it, "saving it" for Brady, only to send it into the net?!? And I suppose the simple explanation was her focus & attention being totally clouded by frustration, so she was desperately going for every ball. So we're back to the attitude thing which, as I said in the live commentary thread in the beginning of the 3rd set, is probably the main cause of losing a very winnable match (and sadly to a pretty unlikable player).

Miha, please start to think that those tantrums are beneath you. Hate them more than you hate your on court mistakes. And you'll find a new level of pride inside that will help your confidence and bring the best out of you, so losses like this don't happen again. Good luck in Miami!

Well tbh in the first part of the match Brady wasn't playing that good to say the least and it was looking like a routine win for Mihaela. But then Brady started playing really well and was dictating play. Mihaela was basically always in the defensive and did a whole lot of running in most of the points. Idk, maybe that was her mistake... should have tried to take the initiative more, even if that meant making some errors... because in the third it became clear that Brady wasn't making that many errors so running and trying to extend points was in vain for Mihaela. In the end I think she was really tired, so I can't blame her for making those mistakes

Is she starting to lose steam? R1 loss in IW followed by R1 loss in Miami... then an unconvincing win where her opponent retired and a loss to Errani in Charleston :scared: I'm pretty confident at the end of last year she would have routined players like Flipkens or Errani...

Well, let's see how she does on the clay. She claims she prefers hard but most of her ITF titles were on clay after all... so I'm somewhat optimistic :yeah:

OMG. Miha really needs to work with a sports psychologist or mental coach or something. Even in doubles I read in her face so much frustration, stress and over-thinking. The focus is not yet where it should be, in order to find the right balance and actually come on top in all these winnable matches that she lost this year.

Mihaela is really slumping lately (in singles)

Budapest R2, Indian Wells R1, Miami R1 and Charleston R2 exits

I really hope Mihaela can turn it around soon and play her best tennis again !

#485 ·
And now Lugano R1 exit. I've only seen the end of the Sabalenka match; and it's not like she wasn't trying, but she was anything but clutch enough to have some chances of turning that around.

Where is the Mihaela who beat Ostapenko only 2 months ago? Totally MIA? I don't know what kind of discussions she has with herself or with her father before or after these matches, but they don't seem to help. Fix it please!

#486 ·
I was watching the match while doing other stuff, so I didn't catch all of it but it seemed like it was always on Sabalenka's racket... either she hit winner or UE. I was expecting she would be able to do more on a slower surface like clay and mix it up a bit but the conditions didn't really help her (damp weather with intermittent rain).

She'll be in the Fed Cup team next week for the first time in some years :yeah: Means she can't play Stuttgart qualies so fingers crossed she makes the MD directly.

Mihaela is in very weak form :help:

I hope she can get out of this slump soon !!! :(

I only saw the MTB of her doubles with Sasnovich against Adamczak/Knoll, which they lost due to mistakes at both ends. But what stood out again, was Miha being the only girl on court with outbursts of frustration. I don't believe any player with that attitude ever won anything big, so I hope someone makes her see things from that angle and hopefully flip a switch in her brain, because this is so unproductive (besides not looking good).

^ So true ! :hi5:

Mihaela MUST change her negative attitude (if she wants to have more success).
She should look how champions behave on the court: Serena, Halep, Sharapova, Kerber, Wozniacki, Kvitova, Azarenka, Stephens, Davenport, Henin, Clijsters, Hingis and Steffi Graf !

To be fair, Halep also had her outbursts, which were getting worse and worse for a while, until the Miami debacle last year, after which she got in touch with a sports psychologist who helped her fix some things (at least partially... and hopefully not temporary).

I was watching Bogdan yesterday, soon after Mihaela, and Ana also had some pointless moments of frustration... Maybe not as bad as Mihaela, but still. Which had me think back of the other Romanian girls: Monica, Irina, Simona... I remember pretty much all of them having such moments. I'm less certain about Sorana, but I suppose she had them as well (maybe not so much between points... I only remember that smashed phone after a FedCup loss).

There are players with tantrums from other countries (Putintseva, Ostapenko, etc), each in their own way. But they tend to be an standing-out exception. In Romania is the other way around: hard to find a girl without tantrums (at least at some point during recent years). So it's probably a flaw of the Romanian Tennis school... not preparing them well enough to handle failure. Especially if it's an insignificant one, as long as you keep your eyes on the target.

Food for thought... for whoever is closer to the business and could pass a message.

#491 ·
I agree, Halep sometimes still has her negative moments
But I saw many matches where Halep overall has improved her attitude A LOT ! :)
A work in progress/a process - as Ivanovic would say

Halep is maybe not the best example :p
But Mihaela should look at all the other champions:
Serena, Sharapova, Kerber, Wozniacki, Kvitova, Azarenka, Stephens, Davenport, Henin, Clijsters, Hingis and Steffi Graf !

Yes, the Romanian girls seem a bit crazy
Don't forget Irina Spirlea !
