Brussels, Round 1: (7)Alexandra Dulgheru def. Polona Hercog 2:6 6:4 6:2
After that first set I came to terms with Alexandra obviously sucking for the rest of the year and only make some noise in doubles, but like often she surprised me just when nobody believed in her abilities anymore...
The fest set was indeed a deja-vu of the Rome beat-down, but with an even more pathetic BP stats of 1/4 as well as underwhelming service games. I didn't know what has happened then, but with the beginning of set 2 the match completely turned around with impeccable holds of serve which didn't allow Hercog any single BP
for the rest of the match!
Since then I've never seen her serving so well (from the live scores):
1st serves: 65%
points won on 1st: 75%
points won on 2nd: 89%
1st serve: 73%
points won on 1st: 81%
points won on 2nd: 50%
Obviously she and her new coach Urpi made out the big weakness of her game and worked hard to fix and improve it. I don't know why it took a whole set to get it together and Polona is of course not the best returner on the tour, but still such an improvement of figures can't be led back only to the decline of the opponent, especially when the opposite was the case till now!
It's nice to see her fighting back and start winning again! hat's what made her so successful in the past and let's hope she can keep it up against Zakopalova who has already beaten her in Doha this year. It won't be easy, but with the boosting self-confidence she can make it!
