Well, not many of them got far...
And except for Monica to some extent, not many impressed since.
This was a particular depressinve day, at the end of a cuple of depressive weeks for the Romanians:
- it started Monday 15th, when Monica's luck from the previous weeks changed, wasting a 6-1 lead in the 1st set of the Nottingham final
- then followed Birmingham with Irina & Monica losing in R1 and Simona in R3 against yet another semi-scrub from out of Top40 (at the time)
- then Eastbourne, with Alex remind us of her 'knee' problem constatly dragging her down, Irina losing in R1 and Monica failing to qualify (and getting a LL chance wasted as well); then today both Monica & Irina lost their doubles
- and finally the Wimbledon quallies, where all Romanians lost.
What was worse these weeks, was seeing all the missed service games, including some with a 40-0 lead; or all the BP's, including some double or triple BP's.
Is it just me or do Romanians in general have a pretty poor psychological preparation, so often collapsing after fails, collapsing under the pressure of expectations, failing to cease opportunities, failing to accept & adapt (i.e: that the opponent plays better, that she figured out her game so something needs to change at the other end too...) or failing to be consistent (i.e.: when they seemingly "forget" what worked the previous set and downgrade their game a lot in the 2nd)?
Are those things that can (more or less) easily improve with the right coach or a psychologist, or do they depend a lot on their background (childhood, early training/coaches, etc) and we shouldn't get our hopes too high on our currently active players?
The only one who appears to manage a match well psychologically on a regular basis seems to be Alexandra, but then her body fails her just as often, so one way or another she still ends up floating under her maximum possible level like the others.
