On thursday night, Serena Williams of the United States made it to the semifinals of the Sydney Apia International a Tier 1 event. After ousting Heather Watson the World's #7 in two sets on wednesday afternoon, Serena had to dig deep tonight outplaying Daniela Hantuchova in 3 tough sets: 4-6 7-6(5) 7-6(6). Serena will now be playing the World #5, Maria Sharapova, on friday night in what will probably be hell of a match. Serena had a few words to say after the win.
Q. You said you weren't quite at your best tonight. Where do you think you need to improve?
SERENA WILLIAMS: You know, I just can hit a little deeper and better, be more consistent. You know, hopefully that will come as hopefully I keep playing.
Q. What are you doing during your off days? Maria is napping and reading.
SERENA WILLIAMS: I am doing treatment, a lot of treatment. I'm not reading. School starts on the 23rd, so I kind of texted one of my professors to tell him I was in Australia, and I don't know if I can make the first assignment in time. He was like, It's fine. I was wondering if it was really you (laughter). I was like, okay, just really nervous about school starting. He's like, Don't worry about it.
Q. How do you like your Australian Open preparation ?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Last week was a disaster and this week has been much better. Yet I still feel like the last match could have gone either way so that stresses me out a little. But I'm up to all the challenges so hopefully I'll keep improving and I'll be better next week. As it right now I'm hitting about 3-4 hours a day, plus the matches I play, plus the gym. So there's not much I can do but try my hardest out there.
