#'s 26 through 320

Thought we could start a thread to talk about the non-elite Top 25 (maybe 30 but it's pretty much the same 16-20 that go to the Finals site every year).

The ITA constantly pubs the elite and is now creating new tournaments... of which nearly every participant is from the Top 16-20 also.

For the sake of the sport at the college level, how about the other 295 D1 women's programs not in the Top 25 elite. That's about 2,500 athletes and 93% of the participation in the college D1 level.

So for those schools not named Vandy/Florida/Georgia/Bama, UCLA/USC/Stanford/Cal,UNC/Duke/Virginia/Clemson, Michigan/Northwestern or Baylor/A&M/Texas/TCU.... how about some love for the other 295 that actually make up the sport.

Re: #'s 26 through 320

a much smaller school to look at will be Univ Central Arkansas, 4 new players that should keep them up around the top of the Southland, Abilene Christian is a well coached team that always plays hard and gets results, Northwestern St and A&M Corpus Christi year end and year out compete and go to NCAA's.

Let's talk about UC Santa Barbara

UCSB added 3 transfers from big time programs.

UCSB added junior Stefani Stojic from Australia, a transfer from Florida. Now Stojic played #6 singles for Florida as a freshman but seems to have been bumped to the bench last season. Still Florida finished last season ranked #6 in the country so any player they recruit or can play in their line-up is probably equivalent to a #1 singles player by Big West standards.

UCSB also added junior Palina Dubavets from Belarus, a transfer from TCU. Now Dubavets played #4 singles for a TCU team that finished last season ranked #17 in the country. Again that probably makes her comparable to a #1 singles player by Big West standards. Transferring to #60 UCSB from #17 TCU is a step down at least team rankings wise.

UCSB added 5 star sophomore Amanda Atanasson who was a 5 star recruit ranked as high as #34 nationally in her recruiting class. She is a transfer from LSU where she mainly played #6 singles and #3 doubles. LSU finished last season ranked #23 in the country. Atanasson looks to solidify UCSB's bottom singles line-up and team depth.

UCSB is also getting freshman Stephanie Yamada from Australia. She had an ITF ranking high of #295.

In addition UCSB is returning their top 3 singles players in Da Silveira, Gilbertson and Baker from last season. UCSB also gets sophomore Lou Adler from France who was nationally ranked in singles as a freshman before she suffered a regular season ending injury last year for UCSB. (She came back briefly for the Big West Tournament.)

So in summary UCSB is returning their top 3 singles players from last year and on top of that are getting like three Big West #1 singles caliber players that can push down the 3 returners to play #4-6 singles for this season. I would say that makes UCSB the early favorite to win the 2015-16 Big West title this season.

Now the UCSB head coach Simon Thibodeau had coached Fresno State into the NCAA Round of 16 fives times as well as finished ranked in the top 20 those same five years. Beachman feared it was only a matter of time until Thibodeau would raise UCSB to another level. This season Thibodeau looks to do just that with the help of his transfers from big time programs.

Re: Let's talk about UC Santa Barbara

UCSB had a local resident make a multi million dollar donation to the women's tennis program. So they have no money or in-state residency restrictions (LB has some grade requirements for intls I'm told; it's not as simple as just recruiting anyone). It's my understanding that at least two of those four ladies did talk with LB coach but their grades couldn't meet the uni required #.

With that kind of money, UCSB may finally end the LB/UCI run. They appear to no longer have residency or grade restrictions with a full scholarship budget (that NOBODY ELSE HAS IN THE BIG WEST).

But WHY did those three girls transfer?

those are some nice pick-ups by UCSB, will need to follow them this year to see how the transfers hold up.

UCSB has beefed up their schedule with Pac-12 opponents USC, Utah and Washington.

I'll also keep an eye on them this season.
