Jumps in Rankings:

1. (10) Duke +9
3. (5) UCLA +2
4. (8) Cal +4
7. (16) Northwestern +9
10. (14) UVA +4
12. (13) Clemson +1
18. (19) Baylor +1
20. (21) Auburn +1

Not sure if Duke should be ranked that highly, but they won the championships after all and now behind Stanford.

Movers in the top 20:

1. (2) Loeb (UNC) +1
4. (11) Elbaba (UVA) +7
5. (6) Ahn (STAN) +1
6. (10) Garcia (UGA) +4
11. (17) Janowicz (UF) +6
12. (21) Bektas (UM) +9
14. (18) Morgan (UF)
17. (25) Kowase (UGA) +8
18. (20) Yurovsky (UM) +2
20. (45) Goldfeld (DUKE) +25 - um what?
I guess that win over Chanelle helped.

Goldfeld lost to unranked Price of UNC although she did win against then #9 van Nguyen. But a bad loss doesn't deserve a 25-spot jump in the rankings. Confused...
like someone else said these rankings are a mess. it really doesn't say anything in the start of the season.

Re: Week 1 Ranking New

Vogasari, Kordolaimi, and Houston all entered the rankings this week

Daniilidou. Venus. Azarenka. Halep. Wickmayer.
Cornet. Ivanovic. Vesnina.. Vaidisova. Krajicek.
Paszek. Begu. Cirstea. Lisicki. Pavlyuchenkova.
Pironkova. Stephens. Tatishvili. McHale. Flipkens.
Grammatikopoulou ~ Papamichail ~ Sakkari
I'm obsessed with the Greek players. Deal with it.

New rankings are out and there are a few changes in the top 20. UCLA was idle yet still moved up over Stanford.

Re: Week 1 Ranking New

Current ranks are coaches popularity poll right now. Pretty sure some of us on the forum spend more time looking/comparing results than those very few coaches.

There are a number of movements that make little sense throughout the thing.

Why did I always think it was a computerized system? Oops.

I thought it starts out with coaches, which I like, but later it converts to a computerized system, at least it use to, not sure if that will continue.

It will be interesting that #3 Stanford plays #4 Florida this weekend and #5 California the following weekend.

That should stir-up the rankings a bit when it is all said and done.

Stanford only played 1 match, shutting out Santa Clara 7-0 and given that UCLA was idle, I guess the move up was more of a correction to move UCLA up, as they did with Duke.

LOL at Georgia down at #12 after beating Georgia Tech 7-0. These rankings are still a joke.

Re: Week 1 Ranking New

Interesting...
Stanford beats Florida and drops for 3 to 4, while Florida remains at 5

University of Houston jumped from 64 to 30 (wonder if they were ever this high)
Harvard jumped from 68 to 35

Re: Week 1 Ranking New

Cal loses to two top 10 teams and drops out of the top 10.

Duke loses to UVA but still remains #1. I guess winning indoors always keeps you at the top of the rankings for most of the season.

Re: Week 1 Ranking New

As usual the first computer rankings are a mess too... huge statistical swings.

A) The sampling is still really small. LMU, not to pick on them, has one ranked win over what was considered a top 50, and jumps in mid-60's Lots of other similar examples. There are some other odd movements too.

B) The first computer poll has to work off the already flawed small coach committee popularity poll. So the original baseline for valuing wins and losses is that flawed poll. Maybe if they ran the thing 2 or 3 times to shake out the first flaw it might help? I know they do that now right before NCAA's to make sure all results are fairly weighted.

C) Doubles is even a bigger mess. How can a pair that has played just four matches (fall and spring) together and are 2-2 but have a top 20 'experimental 6 game' win suddenly be ranked. Off four total results? Silly

Good news is this will eventually sort itself in about 2 more weeks and become a bit more realistic. But the original jumps up and down really do lose credibility for the sport.

My thoughts.

Re: Week 1 Ranking New

do you really think the mess in doubles will right itself? You look at many of these #2 teams and wonder how playing there in the spring can result in such high rankings.
