Re: Acc

Just got back from the UNC/Maryland match, and as expected, it was a one-sided, 7-0 win for the Tar Heels. A few interesting notes, and let me know if you have any questions.

Doubles was decently close, definitely the closest of the day. The teams for UNC were McHale/Slater at 1, Suarez-Malaguti/De Bruycker at 2, and Dai/Lyons at 3. Gina and Zoe are just not a very good team, and they were down a break when the other 2 matches finished. Dai is great at the net, as expected.

Line-up for UNC was definitely not their total A-team, not that it mattered. Gina at 1, Zoe at 2, Lauren at 3, Dai at 4, Lyons at 5, and Kate Vialle at 6. Price and Kay didn't play, which was sad, because I was looking forward to seeing Whitney in action.

None of the singles matches were really standouts, but I was impressed by Vialle, considering she's effectively the #8 player for UNC. She hits a very nice ball, could work on her serve and movement, but she'd be a solid #5/#6, and it was nice to see her clinch the match seconds after Lyons finished, considering she doesn't get to play very often.

Any time I've seen UNC in action, Lauren gets the most support by far. I don't know if she has fans in every city or if she just needs the support, but it's noticeable. She had a nice drop shot pickup/spinning volley winner to end her match.

At one point, Caroline was sitting on a bench, and this woman comes up to her and gets right in her face, like staring, and asks her "Are you not playing today?" Caroline said no, and the woman explained that she was Skylar Morton's mom and was looking forward to watching Caroline. Skylar grew up in the area and trained as a junior at the College Park tennis center, so her mom said that she wanted to come see UNC play. Scouting for NCAAs? Haha

Also, the UNC/Boston College match that was cancelled on Friday because of the lockdown in Boston is rescheduled, possibly for tomorrow. I heard the girls talking about going back up to Boston, because they needed the win to get the ACC regular season title outright or something.

Julia Elbaba wins ACC Freshman of the Year and is the top-ranked freshman in the country right now, just ahead of Hardebeck.

Re: Acc

Duke loses the doubles point to Virginia Tech, will probably have to win 1-4 singles to beat them. Follow here

Re: Acc

Surprised by how much Duke is struggling in doubles against teams like Maryland and VT. Doesn't bode well for their chances to make the final 16, whether they host the opening rounds or not.

Deciding match headed to the 3rd set:

4. Kelly Williford (VT) v Marianne Jodoin (DUKE) 5-7, 6-3

Re: Acc

I feel for Duke. Florida went through this several years ago. Gators were able to make the round of 16, we shall see if Duke can manage.

Re: Acc

I feel for Duke too, but the bottom line is that they shouldn't have lost that singles or doubles match. I know these girls who are playing must be under a crazy amount of pressure, but that's just disappointing. I hope for Mary's sake that they can get a win or two at NCAA's. She's been an amazing player for them, and I would hate to see her end her career like this.

Re: Acc

Heading to the tournament tomorrow, was hoping to catch Duke. I was a fan of Stoica (the 1 for VT) in juniors though so it will be interesting to see her too I suppose.
