Re: Acc

This has been a while but it's such an interesting result;

April 7, 2012

No. 8 North Carolina 4, No. 7 Miami 3

Doubles

1. #4 Featherston/McHale (UNC) def. #24 Bolivar/Zimmermann (UM), 9-8 (8)
2. #71 Hemm/Lyons (UNC) def. #37 Mejia/Lileikite (UM), 8-5
3. Bartenstein/Dubins (UM) def. Suarez-Malaguti/Price (UNC), 8-3

Order of finish: 3, 2, 1

Very interesting dbls lineup by UM, freshmen playing the upper positions. They must be
really good?

Singles

1. #26 Gabriela Mejia (UM) def. #33 Lauren McHale (UNC), 6-1, 6-2
2. #18 Anna Bartenstein (UM) def. #100 Shinann Featherston (UNC), 6-3, 7-5
3. #110 Lina Lileikite (UM) def. #30 Zoe De Bruycker (UNC), 2-6, 6-3, 6-4

I thought UNC upper positions were pretty good, but oh my, UM beat them all

4. Gina Suarez-Malaguti (UNC) def. Melissa Bolivar (UM), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2
5. #98 Caroline Price (UNC) def. Liat Zimmermann (UM), 7-5, 6-4
6. Tessa Lyons (UNC) def. Brittany Dubins (UM), 3-6, 6-1, 6-0

Order of finish: 1, 6, 5, 2, 4, 3

As you can see it was VERY tight, majority of them going to 3rd..

Of course, last year's team fell apart at ACC's (well really against Florida State) and never recovered...

Not sure Virginia can knock off Clemson without Xi Li. Virginia lost 6-1 recently. And the North Carolina/Miami match should be another great one, as fantic pointed out.

Well Duke won all regular season matches, so sadly, they'll win
I guess

That's all I can say Very curious about UM and CU's freshmen, how they'll perform.

This'll be a desperate tourney for CU and GT I guess, if they want to be top 16 before the NCAA Regional..(is it possible?)

Congrats mboyle (I don't think this'll be a jinx )

Re: Acc

from CU site;

"Clemson has a 31-23 all-time mark in the conference tournament and championships in 1986, 1987, 2004, and 2008. "

Man, every major ACC teams seem to have won at least one championship recently, do envy them

And as I've noted earlier, their dbls program is good;

"A key to Clemson’s late success has been the doubles play. The Tigers are 12-3 this season when winning the doubles point, and 6-0 in ACC play. Clemson used the same combinations for all 11 ACC matches, with No. 12 Bek and Wong at the top. The No. 2 slot has gone to the freshmen, Gumulya and Kölzer, and the third spot belongs to Vyskocilova and Monika Kochanova, who are 23-5 on the season. "

Re: Acc

No. 24 Clemson (12-8, 5-3 ACC) def. No. 13 Virginia (12-5, 5-3 ACC), 6-1
April 7, 2012 - Charlottesville, VA

Doubles:
1. #17 Bek/Wong (CU) def. #55 Fraser/Hardenbergh (UVa) 8-3
2. #60 Tomljanovic/Vierra (UVa) def. Gumulya/Kolzer (CU) 9-8(5)
3. Kochanova/Vyskocilova (CU) def. Peretz/Fuccillo (UVa) 8-3
Order of Finish: 3,1,2

Singles:
1. #55 Keri Wong (CU) def. #43 Lindsey Hardenbergh (UVa) 6-3, 6-4
2. #88 Klara Vyskocilova (CU) def. #16 Emily Fraser (UVa) 6-2, 6-4
3. Josipa Bek (CU) def. #111 Hana Tomljanovic (UVa) 4-6, 6-3, 6-1
4. Beatrice Gumulya (CU) def. Erin Vierra (UVa) 6-3, 6-3
5. Nelly Ciolkowski (CU) def. Caryssa Peretz (UVa) 7-5, 6-3
6. #122 Maria Fuccillo (UVa) def. Romy Kölzer (CU) 7-5, 6-2
Order of Finish: 1,2,6,4*,5,3

So CU vs UVA could be a death-match, UVA also can't lose since their ranking is a bit precarious..
The dbls matches will be a veritable battle (since UVA is also a good dbls team)

I talked to an ACC coach who said Clemson has the most talented team in the ACC, they just don't show up a lot of the times. If they show up at the ACC tournament I could see them pulling off some upsets.

Re: Acc

yeah since talent=height

if they can't do it at the ACC tournament, there's still the NCAA Regional, where they could pull-off an upset like SMU and Vandy last year

Having the mental attitude to show up and give it your all is talent too. Sorry, it just irks me when people (in this case the coach, not you) try to act as if talent refers to physical skill alone. It's as difficult or more difficult to conjure up drive, competitiveness and work ethic as it is to teach someone to add more power to her forehand.

Completely agree with you! Well this coach that was talking about their talent is that of your beloved Blue Devils Said he hates playing them because he never knows what to expect

Re: Acc

I think talent refers to ability but obviously yes, performance is affected by attitude, toughness, and a lot of other factors.

Many of these super-talented teams of huge talents that have "retired" and come to college like Clemson have a hard time showing up for matches that don't matter, and when you do that for a while it can become a habit and then you have a hard time showing up for matches that DO matter.

I feel that at the highest levels and on the biggest states the talent usually wins out but you do have teams that seem to always be in the mix at the lower levels and stay competitive simply because of great team chemistry and hustle. I just think that the more talented the player and the more they have been the center of their own universe, the harder it is to get them to buy into the team thing especially when they are surrounded by other malcontent talent. Not impossible, just very difficult.
