Re: Big West - 2009 key matches

CONGRATS TO GOUCI THIS WEEK

By your team not entering your match scores with College Tennis Online.com (nor did SDSU... and a couple other schools...)

You held your ranking despite the loss to SDSU

Re: Big West - 2009 key matches

It doesn't look good for #42 LB v #51 Fl Int'l...

but #64 UCI should get it in...

FIU is an opportunity... if you lose it doesn't really hurt but if you win you get the valueable ranked win....

I thought the scores needed to be entered with the ITA. They conduct the rankings. I don't know which team that burden falls on but SDSU didn't have to enter the scores with CTO if they wanted to get ranked. SDSU's Peter Mattera is already on the ITA women's tennis ranking committee for the West Region.

Then I suggest a double header on Sunday. FIU can play Long Beach St. at 9:00 A.M. Then hopefully after a grueling 5 hour match they can drive to & play UCI at 3:00 P.M.
If FIU has to forfeit doubles & the match to UCI because they have to catch their flight that would be even better.

N.C. State MOVED UP in the rankings from #49 to #47 despite losing 1-6 to Long Beach St. Not to mention the wolf pack have already lost to #63 Old Dominion 2-5.

Re: Big West - 2009 key matches

Gotta agree with your NC State note... there are a couple other odd ones too
Wash St... who are down to just 6 players... are not top 75 .. bad luck but not.
And Oregon... really? Yet holding.
While a couple 45-49 don't belong that high anymore

Wazoo and Oregon must be traditional BCS / Pac10 vote... no fact to it. The bottom half of the Pac would be top half of BW... but not the winner.

Though, UW should be MUCH higher... no respect. A little soft at 5-6 but huge at the top.. should be top 30

Props to Bill & Mary though... I underestimated new team

Sac State is top 40 easily... no love for them

But then again, there are a bunch of schools with new SIDS's not posting scores.

FYI... the ITA pays CTOnline to accumulate all scores. That is where schools are to turn in all results. Been that way for years.

Ashlee Brown/Sianna Simmons (ASU) def. Whitney Paluch/Ashley Macias (CSUN) 8-2
Micaela Hein/Ali Van Horne (ASU) win by default
Order of finish: 2, 1

Singles
Nadia Abdala (ASU) def. Evgenlya Vertesheva (CSUN) 6-2, 6-2
Micaela Hein (ASU) def. Nigora Sirojiddinova (CSUN) 6-2, 6-0
Laila Abdala (ASU) def. Whitney Paluch (CSUN) 6-0, 6-2

Ashlee Brown (ASU) def. Amira Massi (CSUN) 6-0, 6-2
Ali Van Horne (ASU) win by default
Order of finish: 5, 3, 4, 2, 1

What is going on at Northridge? They had 2 walk-ons playing and STILL had to default #6 singles? .

The ASU release said CSUN had a pre-match injury. So 1 out of Jaworowski, Doane, & Fournell is injured. What about the other 2? .
This in addition to Sandra Kulka M.I.A. and Victoria Brymer vanishing from the roster.

Re: Big West - 2009 key matches

# 51 FIU 4, # 42 Long Beach State 3 ... had 3-1 lead (played singles first due to weather threat) and let it get away.

Enjoy your evening Gouci.

Your coach had a family member there the entire match scouting too.... or was that actually YOU there today?

You should win tomorrow.

#51 Florida International def. #42 Long Beach St. 4-3

SINGLES
1. #68 Hannah Grady, LBSU, def. Priscilla Castillo, FIU, 7-6, 6-4
2. Liset Brito, FIU, def. Deborah Armstrong, LBSU, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4
3. Rachel Manasse, LBSU, def. Maria Spenceley, FIU, 6-4, 6-1
4. Anais Dallara, LBSU, def. Maria Paza, FIU, 6-2, 6-3
5. Megan Jones, FIU, def. Julie Luzar, LBSU, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4
6. Maria Vallasciani, FIU, def. Lisa Sutton, LBSU, 6-2, 6-2

DOUBLES
1. Brito/Castillo, FIU def. Dallara/Grady, LBSU, 8-3
2. Armstrong/Sutton, LBSU def. Jones/Spenceley, FIU, 8-1
3. Paza/Vallasciani, FIU def. Manasse/Weeks, LBSU, 8-5

FlU sets the record for most players named Maria on 1 team. Hail Mary.
Maria Spenceley
Maria Paza
Maria Vallasciani
Maria Muci Torres
For some reason Maria Torres, their usual #3 singles didn't even play against LBS. I think UCI may need to sweep all 4 Marias in order to win.

Re: Big West - 2009 key matches

Actually... someone tells me you may be both that person and a member of the UCI staff family... hmmmmmmmm

But yes that was clearly you...

PS... FIU moved their line up all over the place yesterday but with all those Maria's, who knew?

6 at 4
4 at 6
2 doubles to 3 doubles

That coach sets up her line up like she is playing lotto

And sadly it worked... both places she juggled, she got the key points. Oh well, life goes on.

It should never have been an issue.
- Weeks needs to play singles to push the ladder down
- Nobody should ever lose to the FIU chick at 5... and LB did. Up 5-3 in first... and LOST MATCH. And that is the same player who beat UCSB's # 1 in July ITA tourney. What is that person concentrating on cause it ain't tennis?

So will there be changes? Given Weeks sitch and short bench.. could be a long year at the Beach.... top 4 is solid but...............

Re: Big West - 2009 key matches

Gouci... told you that you'd win

FIU again flipped # 1 and # 2
Reinserted # 3
Switched up 2 & 3 doubles pairs

Played 4.45 hours last night, got back to downtown LA hotel at near 11 and got out by 8am again today... whew

But you got the W

Coming off the unranked SD State loss

Should be interesting rankings this week.... and Cal Poly just waiting in the wings...

LB... we got work to do at the bottom...

#65 UC Irvine def. #51 Florida International 5-2

1. Kaloi/Hammel (UCI) def. Brito/Castillo (FIU) 9-7
2. Pazo/Muci Torres (FIU) def. Fermin/Bartlett (UCI) 8-4
3. Miranda Young/Byron (UCI) def. Vallasciani/Maria Spenceley (FIU) 8-5

Doubles Order of Finish: 2, 3, 1

1. Liset Brito (FIU) def. Stephanie Hammel (UCI) 6-4, 6-2
2. Brooke Bartlett (UCI) def. Priscilla Castillo (FIU) 6-3, 7-6
3. Mariana Muci Torres (FIU) def. Clare Fermin (UCI) 6-3, 6-0
4. Courtney Byron (UCI) def. Maria Dolores Pazo (FIU) 6-3, 3-6, 6-1
5. Rebecca Kwan (UCI) def. Megan Jones (FIU) 6-2, 4-6, 6-1
6. Heidi Kaloi (UCI) def. Maria Jose Vallasciani (FIU) 6-3, 7-6

Singles Order of Finish: 3, 1, 4, 6, 5, 2

. . . . .

HUGE UPSET

UCI according to some should have been dropped from the rankings this week. Meanwhile FIU recently defeated #53 Mississippi. To better that FIU then defeated #42 Long Beach St. on the road without the help of FIU's regular #3 singles no less.

UCI walk-on Miranda Young even made a big contribution by helping to win the important doubles point!

After Long Beach St.'s upset it was up to UCI to beat FIU, defend the conference's honor and keep the Sun Belt Conference from thinking they are better than the Big West Conference!

Re: Big West - 2009 key matches

Ha ha... huge upset my ass

FIU played 4 hr 45 min last NIGHT (rain delay) then got to hotel at 11 and head back down 90 minutes on freeway this morning at 8am

Down 2-1 you did win three late singles matches....

Enjoy it... UCI has won a lot of NCAA berths in February

You did do a nice job scouting yesterday though
