Re: Big West - 2009 key matches

Nice win by Hammell but no way that should be that close at 4, FIVE and 6.... UCI wins 6-1 last year... and Kobuch would have been the 1. Weird

Re: #65 UCI def. Hawaii 4-3

I'm reposting this in case you missed it the 1st time Form.

Quote:
I think you spoke again from memory without doing any homework on this season's Hawaii team. I think Hawaii has potential to be a good team.

- Hawaii returns #1 singles Kobuch who was nationally ranked last year.
- Hawaii returns top 3 singles Korec who was pretty good last year.
- Hawaii picked up Wong, a transfer from Washington huskies.
- Hawaii picked up 3 international freshmen, 2 Germans & 1 Belgian. Including Peter who defeated Stanford's Veronica Li in the fall.

I'm actually more concerned about UCI facing Hawaii than San Diego St.
Last season Bernhard def. Kobuch 2-6,6-3,6-0 in the Hawaii fall tourney. But again Hawaii added 6 new players this season and is much improved.

SDSU has upgraded their doubles with the addition of the Ellison sisters. In addition when the bottom 2 singles of SDSU are playing well, they are a tough team this year.

Re: Big West - 2009 key matches

The SDSU coach must be performing miracles that haven't occured the last two years.

Cause those results at 5 & 6 should be UCI's strength... and maybe they will be later. Everybody has bad days... but that certainly would have been expected to be 2 points for UCI

SDSU soph Colman (a walk on year one)... 4 star peaked at 97 her junior year
UCI soph Kwan.... 5 star peaked at 40 her junior year.. finished at 51
and UCI's Kwan lost the day before to UHw walk on frosh Nafarrette.... 3 star # 161 her senior year

SDSU soph Roxanne Ellison ... 4 star peaked at 76 this past summer after a late run from 102
SDSU senior Kaloi (from Hawaii)... 4 star # 34 her senior year in HS

Again acknowledging it is early and a bad day... they all have them.. but 4-6 should be UCI's strength

Re: San Diego St. def. #65 UCI 5-2

Not excuses Rob, just some observations about SDSU. The type of person that makes excuses wouldn't have posted the scores to any match that his team had lost in the 1st place. I tell it like I see it.

Re: San Diego St. def. #65 UCI 5-2

I didn't expect UCI to win both Nos. 5 & 6 and I did my homework. I thought doubles, and singles 1, 5 & 6 would all be a toss up.

This season Colman has gone 3 sets with blue chipper Melissa Saiontz of Princeton and even Michelle Murphy of UCSB. Colman is a little inconsistent but can be good when she's on. The same goes for the Ellison sisters. Nos. 5 & 6 singles had been an achilles heel for SDSU the last couple of years but if they have shored that up this year they will be tough.

Alyssa Nafarrete is under rated but a good player. She had a low tr.net 3-star ranking but had a USTA national ranking high of #291 in 2007. For comparison the highest USTA national rankings of Luzar was #347 and Manasse #381.

Roxanne Ellison had a USTA national ranking high of #163. By comparison UCI's 5-star Kristina Smith's highest USTA national ranking was #207. So Ellison is also under rated but a good player.

Congrats to LBS for beating a ranked opponent.

Good ranked win by Hannah Grady. That probably earns her BW Player of the Week.

For the sake of the Big West let's hope N.C. St. doesn't completely fall out of the rankings and is still ranked at the end of the season.
