Describe your tennis game

I keep reading all about the favorite tennis players on this message board however I'm curious to find out more about the posters. Obviously we all have an interest in tennis - whether it's playing or watching it on T.V. For those of you who do like to play.....what is your game like?
As for myself, I'm pretty much a beginner. I've only been playing tennis off & on for 5 years......moreso off than on. Two years ago I started playing with a group of guys (and some women) here in Indy and have been playing much more often.
I prefer playing singles over doubles since I don't have much finess up at the net (although I'm slowly getting better). Right now I would say that my strengths are quickness around the court and, when it's on, my first serve. I'm slowly developing a much more accurate and powerful backhand but I need to keep my back foot on the ground. My forehand, although it contains a better technique, breaks down much more often.
My weaknesses are definitely my second serve (pretty much guide the ball in.....very attackable) and footwork. I'm very fortunate to have found my Indy Tennis community and hope to play a couple of local tournaments this summer/autumn.
I've recently begun taking lessons and hope to continue throughout the summer. Vroome...Shvedova

Re: Describe your tennis game

I always : Attack from my forehand, even if the ball is short.
Go for backhand down the line when the ball is short, otherwise cross court, mostly right at the baseline.
First serve motion is TERRIBLE, very loose, though it always brings me a couple of aces in a match, and I can really rely on it when I need it. Second serve is still just putting the ball over with a little bit of effect, though on practice I'm developing a Nadal-ish second serve, with a lot of spin. Volleys are missed if not too simple. Smash is always where my opponent is.

On a good day : FH Winner/UE ratio is positive. BH DTL is on, if cross court, the chance it goes in is close to a 100%. 2-3 aces, no double faults.

On a bad day : I might as well not hit the ball when it's too my forehand. Julia Goerges' forehand would look shorter. BH is still constant, though. No aces, many DFs. Oh, and a attack, insulting myself and all the other shit...

Too bad I'm mostly on the 'bad' day, cause I really could do more if I had consistensy. Last week, I took 3rd place in the tournament, lost in semis to a boy I had 3-0 W/L to, 64 62. No fight, just . People were telling me to be happy I won the 3rd, but I wanted the 1st/2nd place.

That was long.

I am a bad player but I enjoy playing and I don't care if I lose. I just love to bounce the ball (if I manage to)!

Re: Describe your tennis game

Hmmm, ok

I would say I have a very good first service which is pretty hard & placed. It also normally comes to a very good quote and so it is a good weapon for me.

My second service however is also not really good & against good players I often get returnwinners back. I don't risk too much, however I should sometimes, cause I have seen many times that it can be really nice as well. I all in all rarely have DF's.

My forehand normally always been my best shot I'd say, it is extremly flat & very hard hitted , however this year not that consistant as I wanna see it. But it is more a mentally problem this year I'd say , I think too much , probably cause I wanted to much this year, but yeah. I can also play forehand-slice, but seldom. It is more when I see the opponent reacts better on very hard-hitted ball and has obviously big troubles with the slice. But it is not that often, cause it is also not my style to play slice there as well There must be one side with which I can hit hard

I'm one handed-backhand, however it is 80-90 % Slice during a match , whereas in practising I am able to hit it hard as well. I think my Slice-Backhand then is effective as well & many players have troubles to bring it back fine. My Slice is really consistant.

On the net I am very good with my backhand and I love backhand-volleys, however with forehand I often make too many errors unfortunately, despite I really like it go on the net.

On return I often risk a lot when it is on FH and so sometimes have , especially at the beginning on a match , a few too many errors. I like more to return hard services than these slow ones I usually stand around 0,5 - 1 meter in the field when I return. When I return on backhand it is quite consistant.

With 1,89 m I am pretty tall at all, but I am pretty fast for that, but my weakness is that I often stand wrong to the ball and so make sometimes a lot errors.

2008 is not my best season I'd say, 2007 was all in all better, but I am optimistic and I'm sure after a worse year will come a very good one as well. It is more a mental thing all in all, cause sometimes it is better than in all years before. Just not that consistant as usual. I often play very good TILL I have the chance That was horrible this year. Once I lost 0-6,3-6 in 115 Minutes 'cause of that Very disappointing if you did not play so bad all in all. Normally I have been pretty strong mentally.

So you can see my game is a mix between offensive (FH) and defensive (BH) and I am all in all content with my game, despite it does not work 100% this year. I am looking forward to next year and I am sure it will go better then again. I always been quite unlucky with injuries and still am. When I think all is fine for moment, sthg. else is comming

I could also go more in the detail, but I guess that's OK for first

Re: Describe your tennis game

my game is hitting the ball hard
My first serve is good when it goes in, but my second serve is weak.
My forehand is my weaker side, but still very strong, and my backhand I can hit winners from any where on court.
I also rely on my speed to run down a lot and my running passing shots have become a weapon for me now.
The only things that I want to improve are my volleys, serve and strokes consistency.

Re: Describe your tennis game

I am male, right handed, slow, and a 4.5 player.

I toss the ball extremely high on my serves and I can hit my first serve maybe 90 mph in practice. In matches i can hit my 1st serve pretty hard but im not very good at placing it. Even on a good day my serving pct. is around 50% . My 2nd serves are just as hard as my first with a little spin. I double fault between 5-10 times a match. My real strength is my return though, I'm good at taking it on the rise and hitting winners. I find it easy to break.

I was messing around with different grips, and I tried using a grip like Lucie Safarova (semi-western forehand, crazy flat grip on backhand), and it actually worked really well. So now my forehand is really versatile and I can change pace with it well, or hit with extra spin if I want to. I hit most of my winners with this shot and I hit harder than most anyone I play. Besides lobbing, my backhand has one option which is hit hard crosscourt except on short balls. I only slice on my backhand and I like to drop shot on both sides. I hit as hard as I can from both sides but I'm actually relatively consistent considering that.

I'm known for often dropping 40-love leads in games, and I'm a slow starter. I rarely win comfortably, usually in 3 sets. I used to play junior tournaments a lot but i really only play adult ones now (I'm 16). My best result is I got to a final of a 4.5 tournament this year. I'm really bad at playing people I've never played before.

Lastly, I use a Babolat Pure Drive Roddick with Gamma Marathon strings at 63 pounds (I prefer regular synthetic gut but I broke the strings once a week with those).

All in all, I'm a decent local player but probably won't play for college unless I get in better shape (which I've been trying to do - lost 20 pounds recently).

Re: Describe your tennis game

My game is built around first serve, backhand, and movement. If those three things are on, I can drub anyone. If I'm just a touch off on some of these shots or movement, I'm in for a long day in the office. Forehand is big but streaky, kinda like a Vaidisova streaky. Volleys are solid. I have video in the Video or Photo of Playing Tennis thread.

Re: Describe your tennis game

I used to a defensive baseliner. Get a lot of balls in and retrieve. But over the past few months I have developed into an agressive baseliner and my motto is 'hit the ball and hit it hard.' lol.

Strengths; FH, movement, power, FH slice, mentality, consistency.

Nor strength nor weakness; BH, drop shot, overhead, volleys.

Weaknesses; serve (1st and 2nd), BH slice, putaways, drive volleys.

Re: Describe your tennis game

I used to be a really bad pusher, but now I'm becoming more aggressive as I grow taller and stronger.

My serve isn't anything special, just a lot if top-spin on it so it has a bit of kick, but otherwise its just a bit of side-slice. I don't go for too much, my second serve is basically 95% of a first serve and I barely ever double fault. I like to land it short on the 1st court to get the most angle which opens up the court well.

My forehand is good, can generate alot of pace and a helluva lot of topspin. I like going down the lines and keeping it deep until I get a short ball to pounce on. Forehand is probably my strongest shot, can hit it from anywhere to anywhere as hard as I want to. I try to run around the backhand on the odd occasion, but I don't too much.

I have a 2-handed backhand which is absolutely terrible. Really bad. I shank it alot, but its slowly becoming more consistent. I was single handed until a few months ago, but i found it hard when the ball was coming hard and low, kind of around my feet, so i switched. It's good DTL, but cross court I still can't generate enough pace and it ends up very short and loopy. I have a single-handed slice, which is great. Very solid, very low and very deep. I use a slice 80% of the time just to move them around and give me a bit of time to get in the right position, as my movement isn't a strong point, not terrible, just not really explosive with my speed.

I dropshot a fair bit, usually against my weight challenged opponents lol. Backhand is one handed slice dropshot, not really alot of backspin, just keep it low and making sure the ball bounces twice as soon as possible. My FH dropshot is 2 hand slice and It just dies, it looks lke its going deep, but yeah just drops over and stops. I chuck in a few deep 2-handed FH slices just to keep them guessing aswell.

I have a good lob aswell. My FH is always deep and usually to a corner, preferably over their backhand side, but quite often my BH topspin lob is too short with no direction, and is put away, so I don't use it alot at all.

Volleys I have really good reflexes, and I'm rarely passed in my league. Both volleys usually are heavly sliced and I can place them anywhere. Swing FH volley is also a face from the service line area. I usually approach to the backhand, by either keeping the ball very low, or looping it higher with lots of topspin - which gives me a bit more to time to come in aswell.

I think thats it. I like singles more than doubles, because more pressure on me, yeah and I'm a ball hog.

Re: Describe your tennis game

I had a weird practice session the other day. I went from an agressive baseliner to a weird touch-shot Martina Hingis-like player.

I dunno what happened, I couldn't power through my shots and my forehand was sooooo off. I ran around it alot to hit the BH. My drop shots and lobs were weirdly really good..i was surprised myself lol.
