I was going to make a thread for NIIC which started yesterday but it seems there isn't much interest around college tennis anymore (where's that rabid thing frantic when you need it?).

Figured we can just use this thread to discuss results and whatever else for this season.

Just a totally ridiculous format. Di Lorenzo would have won anyway but that is just a perfect example of how broken the scoring system is.

No way she stays in college after this year, surely.

It should be an interesting weekend in Florida.

Stanford vs Oklahoma State on Fri in Orlando at 3pm (ESPN3)
Oklahoma State vs Florida on Sat in Gainesville at 4pm
Stanford vs Florida on Sat in Gainesville at noon.

Gators have their 161 consecutive Home Game win streak on the line!!!
I think Stanford holds the record at 184 losing to Gators in 2011 NCAA final.

ORLANDO – Nine months later, Stanford and Oklahoma State squared off in a highly-anticipated rematch of last year's NCAA championship.

Different setting. Same result.

Senior Taylor Davidson shook off an early deficit to grind out a three-setter, clinching No. 5 Stanford's 4-1 victory over No. 6 Oklahoma State on Friday night at the USTA National Campus in Orlando as part of the 2017 College MatchDay series.

The stakes were not as high as last May, when No. 15 Stanford became the lowest-seeded team to win an NCAA crown. But the early-season result likely sends a message to fellow contenders: expect 18-time NCAA champion Stanford to be in the national title mix once again.

Just like the 2016 final, Stanford (4-0) fell behind 1-0 after dropping the doubles point to Oklahoma State (8-2). The Cowgirls grabbed the early advantage by winning tiebreakers at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots after the Cardinal snagged court two.

But there was no panic from Stanford, which finished 7-2 last season when losing the doubles point. Four of those wins came in the postseason.

Instead, Stanford focused its attention on singles, ripping off three straight wins before Davidson's ninth career clincher.

Emily Arbuthnott contributed Stanford's first point, defeating Carla Tur Mari 6-3, 6-0 on court five.

Caroline Lampl edged Aliona Bolsova 6-4, 7-6 (3) at the No. 5 spot, putting Stanford in front 2-1.

Already gaining momentum, Melissa Lord turned her match on court three, outlasting Vladica Babic 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 to make it 3-1 Stanford.

The Cardinal was then in complete control, with Davidson one game away from finishing off Lushkova while Caroline Doyle and Emma Higuchi were battling back in their matches.

Improving to 14-9 in three-set matches over her career, Davidson secured Stanford's fourth straight win minutes later.

The Cardinal is now in position to make an even stronger statement, closing out perhaps its most challenging road swing in recent memory.

Stanford next travels to Gainesville, Fla., for a true road match against No. 1 Florida (7-0) on Sunday at 9 a.m. PT. In what has developed into the best rivalry in college tennis, Stanford has won seven of the last 10 meetings against Florida since the powerhouses matched up in the 2010 NCAA final. Four of the matches have taken place in the postseason while Sunday's contest will represent the sixth straight of a home-and-home series in the regular season, as both programs have the mutual respect to test themselves early.

Also on the line is Florida's 161-match overall home winning streak, which is the longest active home winning streak of any NCAA Division I team in any sport. The Gators last home loss came back on May 15, 2004 against Miami in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Oklahoma State gets the first crack at snapping the streak, as the Cowgirls are also headed to Gainesville for a match on Saturday night.

Regardless, it means a very quick turnaround for Florida, which still has some work to do to catch Stanford, as the Cardinal owns the longest active home winning streak in NCAA history, producing a 184-match winning streak at Taube Family Tennis Stadium from 1999-2011.

No. 5 Stanford 4, No. 6 Oklahoma State 1

DOUBLES
1) Babic/Tur Mari (OKSTATE) d. Arbuthnott/Davidson (STAN) 7-6 (5)
2) No. 36 Doyle/Lord (STAN) d. Blanco/Bolsova (OKSTATE) 6-4
3) Adamovic/Lushkova (OKSTATE) d. Higuchi/Lampl (STAN) 7-6 (4)
Order of Finish: 2, 3, 1

SINGLES
1) Taylor Davidson (STAN) d. Viktoriya Lushkova (OKSTATE) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4
2) No. 38 Caroline Doyle (STAN) led Katarina Adamovic (OKSTATE) 5-7, 7-6 (6), 3-2, susp.
3) No. 13 Melissa Lord (STAN) d. Vladica Babic (OKSTATE) 2-6, 6-3, 6-0
4) No. 75 Caroline Lampl (STAN) d. Aliona Bolsova (OKSTATE) 6-4, 7-6 (3)
5) Emily Arbuthnott (STAN) d. Carla Tur Mari (OKSTATE) 6-3, 6-0

Order of Finish: 5, 4, 3, 1

The score was incredibly lopsided, but one other bit of "good" news is that Lampl had at least one match point against Austin while serving for the match at 5-4 in the 3rd, but she obviously didn't convert.

Stanford has a strong team, but Florida is stacked from top to bottom, with Keegan and Porter not even playing the match. I like Florida's odds of taking it all this year...but, then again, I said that last year as well.

The next two years are going to be interesting for Florida though, as it loses Woolcoock, Keegan and Liang to graduation after this year, and then Austin, Danilina, Kuhlman and Porter next year. Victoria Emma is the sole recruit currently listed on TRN for next year. Roland is going to need to replace a TON of incredibly talented players to stay at the level the team is at now.

Lele had the Cards keep it in 2nd gear, still early in the season.

Gators just came off winning indoor, so they were finely tuned.

Things get serious in April, when Cards be running on all cylinders.

Aside from Florida and Stanford, I expect Ohio State and North Carolina to be the teams to beat...

Cal beat UCLA 6-1

Bears Roll Past UCLA, 6-1 - CalBears.com | University of California Official Athletic Site

The results were surprising, not much because of the rankings (#9 UCLA, #18 CAL), which seemed off to me, but because Manasse did not play. This resulted in two reshuffled doubles teams: Starr/Jansen at 1, and Alexis Nelson/Stephane Lin at 3; Hauger/Popovic stayed at 2. But the Bears won easily at 2 and 3 to get the doubles point.

Then in singles, everyone moved up on, with Lin joining at #6.

Popovic played #1 and really impressed by beating Shibahara. She has improved so much.

On the top 3 courts, Cal just played the big points better. The bottom 3 courts were a battle. Maria Smith at five squandered a handful of match points, with her serve betraying her when pressure was on. She lost against Andrews, giving UCLA the only point of the day.

I don't think Cal has great depth this year, at least not compared to last year. But today, the Bears had enough.

What a difference a few weeks makes! UCLA pulled off an amazing comeback win over Cal today. They won the doubles point but then quickly lost 3 singles matches. They won the last three in three sets to complete the win. Gabby Andrews has been a nice addition for UCLA, really glad to see her playing well!

This will continue to be UCLA's only way of winning matches this season. They'll need to win the doubles point and get 3 singles wins. Stella switched all of the doubles teams, and that seems to be working in UCLA's favor. UCLA's hurting in the middle of the singles lineup right now with 2, 3 and 4. If I was Stella, I would try: 1) Shibahara, 2) Hart, 3) Fleming, 4) Andrews, 5) Miller, 6) Wiley. After finally getting to see the team, I also think the players make too many unforced errors.

Against Stanford, I wasn't surprised that Stanford won, but I was surprised that UCLA got 3 points. I think Stanford's issue is that all of their players are similar from 1-6, so they may not have the players to win consistently at the top of the lineup but the bottom of their lineup are good enough to consistently win.

Well it finally happened; Florida lost at home for the first time in 13 years, a streak that spanned 163 matches in a row, with a 4-1 loss to Georgia.

The Streak(s) is Over - Florida Gators

The amazing thing was not necessarily that it happened, although it was certainly an upset, but how decisively Georgia pulled it off, with the doubles point and three straight sets singles wins. Perez and Christofi BLITZED Woolcock and Neel, respectively. Florida picked up one win at #4, and the remaining matches were in a third set.

I've thought that this Georgia team could be real contenders this year, with so many talented players, but could they be a real threat to the title? I'd like to see how they match up against UNC, but this result shows that, if they're playing well, they are certainly in the mix.

I am not surprised. This is tennis. No matter how good you are as a player, you're going to have bad days on the court, where nothing is going right.
Add to that a team that wants to knock you off AND not just a Top 20 team, but a #6 ranked team.

Then again, maybe they peaked too early, after beating Stanford, and emotionally they're flat, and need this loss to get back into it!!!

This could be 2010 all over again, where Florida is the favorite to win it all...

wow...interest here has really dropped off. Too bad.

However, great win for the Card yesterday defeating Cal at Cal. The two freshmen have been rock solid and the team will need them to continue that play as they head into the NCAA playoffs.

I attached a shot from last weekend's match. Go Card!

urklerlay? (did you get locked out)

What's the story on Davidson? Is she recovering from an injury?

I like that she's at #3, actually, as her style of play does not give her much of a chance at #1.

Doyle has been stepping up at #1 giving Card a 50% shot.

Speaking of interest, I think their are a few factors in play:
1) Fantic's disappearance
2) New rules, shorten the game, exciting? or disappointing? Probably has divided the interest in the game. Personally, I hate attempts to shorten the game.
3) Junior talent turning pro has diluted the talent playing college (nothing new) but more international players seem to have leveled the playing field.

Vanderbilt look certain to win SEC champs over Florida as top seeds: Vanderbilt Tennis -- Florida vs Vanderbilt

I guess it's indoors and there are only 5 courts available. Line 6 only started when a court became free. Very close match on 5 courts + doubles, line 6 heading for a double bagel.

Vanderbilt (also?) beat Florida a week ago and with Georgia suffering a shock defeat to Texas A&M at the same time, took the regular season title outright.

EDIT: the fightback starts here; no double bagel, at least.
