LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The 22nd-ranked UCLA women’s tennis team fell to No. 15 Pepperdine, 6-1, on Thursday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Despite the loss, the Bruins registered a big win in doubles as Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips downed the No. 3 pair in the nation.

In doubles play, Harrison and McPhillips took down third-ranked Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox, 6-2, on court 1 shortly after Terri Fleming and Kelly Shaffer fell to the 21st-ranked pair of Stefani and Runglerdkriangkrai on court 2. A battle for the doubles point ensued on court 3. Kristin Wiley and Alaina Miller took the match down to the wire, but were unable to overcome 57th-ranked Gulbe and Milovanovic. The Waves took an early 1-0 lead.

In singles, Pepperdine quickly extended the lead with wins on courts 6, 3, and 5, to take the match 4-0. Cutura added another point for the Waves on court 4 as she defeated Wiley in straights. McPhillips finally put the Bruins on the board when she took down Gulbe on court 2 in a third set tiebreaker. Last to finish, Harrison went head to head with sixth-ranked Stefani on court 1. Harrison and Stefani traded sets to force a third. Despite a back-and-forth battle, Harrison fell in the tiebreaker, 10-8.

Next up, the Bruins host a doubleheader with the men’s team on Saturday, Feb. 20. The men square off with UC Irvine at 10 a.m. PT, followed by the women’s match against California at 1 p.m. PT.

The current sophomore class is really hurting UCLA (Fleming, Wiley, Magill). They were all blue chips but none of them have really been great. I was hoping Terri Fleming would be, but so far it hasn't been the case. In addition, with Brady leaving early and Hibi turning pro, that left a lot of holes which have never been filled unfortunately.

Next year won't be a great year for UCLA either with their two best players currently leaving (Cat and Kyle) and with two good recruits coming in (Shibahara and Hart). They'll need more out of the sophomore class, or hopefully get another solid recruit, a transfer, or even an international player.

Cal defeated UCLA 5-2 today. UCLA basically needs wins from doubles, #1 singles, #2 singles, and another singles to win. That's going to be tough to get in most matches against the top teams. They got 2 of the 4 today and were close in #1 and #2, but that was going to be tough against Cal's top 2.

Hart probably changed her mind. She just played the ITF tournament this week and lost to her friend and teammate next year, Shibahara.

One would think UCLA would still be the frontrunner for Dolehide. Some seem to think that Texas now has a shot with her sister there and with their new facility being built (or is it finished already?).

I don't get why Luca plays 6 (even though she has ITF experience - weird for a "club" player) when Magil or Shaffer are probably better. Unless they're both injured still.

Thanks for your report, troyvan

UCLA just defeated USC 4-2 (one match still being played).

UCLA got points from all singles wins on courts 1, 2, 3, and 5. I was surprised considering UCLA lost the doubles point. I also thought USC would have the advantage with UCLA losing more from last year. Nice to see Cat win over Gugu. Cat was actually up 5-1 in the first too. It's also nice to see Kyle beat Westby after what happened last year at USC in their matchup. Miller stepping up to get a point also should do a lot for her confidence going forward.
